I've been making video games in some form for 20 years, so I wrote an article about my process - and why I don't use an engine.
Freelance programmer & maker of weird things. I post mainly about programming and game development, and repost cool art. (they/them)

This is a friendly reminder that you can still take your time and enjoy reading an entire article in two hours instead of the LLM-generated bullet point version in 5 minutes.
It's fine, really.

@SiegfriedEhret Ah ouais, Ƨa part vraiment vite les offres en ce moment, ils ne mentaient donc pas š
@gweh @SitaDulip That's unironically a good way to develop in C (or other languages). Allocate a chunk of memory at startup, split it into multiple pools/arenas and each system has a memory budget that it can't exceed. And yeah, the OS just handles the dealloc for you when you exit, so doing twice (or more with RAII) is a big waste.
It's how we did it in tools/games until not that long ago and still very much a thing for consoles and embedded :)
The world in 2025 is completely bonkers! For example, I went on a podcast! https://youtu.be/ioMKDonZcgg - at Wookash Podcast we talked about Unity, Blender and some other stuff. Iāve used up my talking quota for half a year.

@elsif Looks neat, always good to see more tactics games š
I don't see the soulslike aspect in the trailer though. I'm curious what parts of that genre made it into the game/demo?
@datagoblin haha that's true, i dunno why.
Always wanted to make a game in that aspect, maybe it's because it's close to the Game Boy aspect ratio? š¤
@datagoblin Aww adorable, makes me want to build a smol and cute RPG like this :3
@codecat oh no, sorry if this wasn't clear enough, i am not the creator, i just wanted to share a great tool.
To clarify, i am not the author of the software, i just think it's great.

File pilot is finally in public beta, i've been looking forward to this for a long time \o/
I recommend anyone tired of Microsoft's sloppy File Explorer to give it a try, it's a blast!
