Craig Brozefsky

I like to build simple, secure and resilient information systems to empower and connect people. I believe that this is best done with Free Software, open data standards, open protocols, and restrained craftsmanship.

I am happiest when I get to do this work with those fighting fascism, ethnic-cleaning, genocide and protecting our environment.

To make a living, I provide consulting and coaching services for software, data, and security engineering.

@zachleat for sure, years of trauma, and feeling like you are building on quicksand, even more so for those who do systems administration of dozens of hosts.

In search of some change, some excitement, and new ideas, I have set down some of the tools I have grown to love over the last three decades as a software engineer. I don't have some big critique of them, or their communities, but simply seek novelty to invigorate my relationship with my work. Perhaps I will pick some of them back up, with fresh insights.

The #HelixEditor is perhaps my favorite new tool. I have wanted to deeply learn a modal text editor for years, and with the proliferation of tree-sitter and lsp tooling for so many languages, changing editors became much easier. Of course, #emacs is not an editor, as much as a text focused lisp desktop environment, but there was space and time to try out the new tool.

If all you have is an insanely expensive, rapidly depreciating hammer, everything had better be a nail or you'll never hit quarterly shareholder expectations.

It’s a shame that globalization of capital has resulted in a backlash against a global conception of our shared humanity.

Watching mentees or more junior coworkers develop their skills and surprise you with their insights and speed of learning is so gratifying.

@abcdw keeping the plane from the back of your forearm, thru the wrist, and the back of your hand, flat, may help. Learned that from a coworker who also played piano. That and, eliminating the mouse (using trackpad or trackball) helped with the first bought of RSI I dealt with.

@abcdw Home row mods made a huge difference for me, specifically the ZMK implementation for my wireless Corne low profile kbd. It is also what i bring with me on my motorcycle tours, packs well into my laptop bag. I got mine from typeractive, as a no-solder kit, the the ez-socket version is better if you have access to soldering gear.

Considering you thumb pain, the split kbs may help. As eMacs user, the home row mods were game changing.

@jameshowell that’s a shame but not a surprise. I have mixed feelings here, and have seen the pile-on tendencies of the fediverse go sideways. But, the freedom of association, and disassociation, is foundational. Glad your server transition went smoothly, as did mine a few months ago.

Instead of reading reviews for a product, search for how to fix it, and see what comes up as common problems and solutions.

I think part of the LLM-Hype is that we all can be managers now. Not knowing anything, not doing anything, but telling others to go and produce a result we can then happily attribute to ourselves.

@jack @DanielMroz we just had to evict two red squirrels doing the same, tho we did not find evidence of wiring damage, probably because the little bastards got their fill of strawberries, bird seed and other delectables from the yard already. Good luck!

@jameshowell @alex are you suggesting that passive aggressive PR comments were not part of Linus’ vision for git?

@caizoryan the documentation, and videos, from @daviwil on System Crafters are great for this and other things #emacs.

@jwildeboer i just ran into this twice. Controller board for washing machine, and lawn mower failed. Traced both to a glue and epoxy covered board that rendered the sockets for wiring harness unreplacable and components invisible and undebuggable. Required replacing entire board.

In one case it took a month and two tries by the appliance service, who graciously sheilded me from the parts and labor fiasco outside of warranty. Otherwise i was looking at paying nearly 75% of the washer cost to repair.

The mower did 10yrs service and could do the same again, but I couldn’t wait to repair and replace with another before the jungle took over our yard. I can salvage the motor, or see if the manufacturer can supply an entirely new harness, but i doubt it. I would have to replace nearly all the electronics and wiring and relays and switches, they assembled it so poorly.

My response is no. The Internet is essential for our planet. It is an open system where we can build the features we need. It is so much better than any alternative structure for a global electronic network could be. The problems with the Internet are problems with our society, not with the Internet. And we can address those problems using the network.
