We have to talk about burning trash🗑️🔥
Waste incinerators / waste-to-energy plants that generate electricity and heat are an enormous and often underestimated source of CO2 🏭💨🌎. For example, in Germany, a country where waste-to-energy plants are common, their emissions are higher than those of cement.
Waste incinerator operators will often claim that half of their emissions don't count 🌿 or even that they already have net-negative emissions 🌎. I disagree with both 🧵

@KIT_Karlsruhe danke fürs Nachfragen 🙂

@GrapheneOS with that in mind, do you have plans for a reasonable repairability? Like it doesn't have to be modular/upgradable device, but at least don't require a heat gun to remove the screen and don't glue in the battery (just to name two examples). I think that would really add value.

@djh what's your plan, the AX210?

2025-05-13

@djh TBH I don't think it's just Framework. You can basically buy whatever chipset that was released in said year and run into these issues. Like buy an X1 carbon in spring and you'll have a similar mess. Partly I think it's hardware vendors, and partly it's also Linux and how often the kernel is just utterly broken.

@djh sounds like any Intel system I had in the last years 😅

2025-05-08

@cheezychippy @djh @eliasp somewhat related: phoronix published new AMD vs Intel performance numbers (without energy efficiency tests though):

@djh as much as I love what AMD is doing, not everything is great:

1. Their weird USB port usage restrictions (see image and knowledgebase.frame.work/en_us

2. Their OSS GPU drivers are not nearly as good as the Intel ones. Either use mesa (which is unofficial but works OKish) or use ROCM (OSS and official but harder to install)

This week I've learned that "per-connection randomized MAC" – while being great for privacy – can be an issue for login-based WiFi networks. First of all it requires you to login again every time you reconnect, but you may also get issues with let's say hotel WiFis that limit the number of devices on one account 😅

I think this is mostly an issue caused by the captive portal implementation.

CC @GrapheneOS

Screenshot of the Wi-Fi network privacy settings with the 3 options:

1. Use per-connection randomized MAC (default)

2. Use per-network randomized MAC

3. Use device MAC

@djh @eliasp IIRC the newer chips are slightly more performant and energy efficient, the latter being the main reason why people like the AMD models.

@thezoq2 have you seen their inline question "Note: backward justification is NP-hard, we’re not sure how Spade supports this, if it does at all. If you know please enlighten us in the comments!)"?

I think strong and weak typing in programming languages is actually a spectrum rather than a binary classification.

See terraform for example:

> All values have a type, which dictates where that value can be used and what transformations can be applied to it.

developer.hashicorp.com/terraf

OK, but URLs, subnets, IP addresses... they're all strings in terraform, and you CANNOT apply all transformations to each possible string value.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have Ada.

a screenshot of an article, titled: "Why do AI company logos look like buttholes?" followed by a bunch of AI company logos that, well, kinda look like buttholes.

@Sandra that was 4 years ago. Feeder for example can be installed from Google Play, so I'm wondering if that restriction was lifted since then.
