Instant cameras aren't designed for use at 40 below, and cannot be recommended for outdoor photography during the winter in Fairbanks.

Still, we gave it a go and managed to capture 3 images, documenting the feeling (for us) of the past couple of very cold weeks in the Alaskan Interior.

An #Alaska Native mutual aid network tackles the climate crisis
The Smokehouse Collective invests in “our resilience as Native peoples to persevere in our cultures despite the global impacts we are facing.”

In September 2022, remnants of Typhoon Merbok damaged more than 35 communities along 1,300 miles of Alaska’s west coast, destroying food, fishing gear and camps that had been used for subsistence harvesting for generations.

@seachanger I have a friend who had it twice in 2 months. Not only is quickly waning immunity an issue, but the proliferation of variants probably doesn't help either

2023-12-07

@seachanger thank you for saying this. I typed up like five different comments but I really don't know what to say other than yeah I really feel this

@spiraledu are they comfortable enough for a lot of walking/hiking/snowshoeing longer distances?

What's everyone's favorite boot for southcentral winters? I was looking at canadian forces arctic mukluks because they're pretty cheap on army surplus stores but I think they're supposed to be more for dry-super cold interior conditions and might not be great for wetter snow?

Has everyone commented on the state transportation plan yet? I think today is the last day to submit comments on projects like the west susitna access road, the extra lanes they want to add to the seward highway, etc publicinput.com/r6552#3

@seachanger The CDC obsessing over handwashing and refusing to say the word "mask" has also done a serious number on people. Heard multiple (unmasked) people say stuff like "oh, COVID seems to be going around, make sure you wash your hands"
Like obviously wash your hands, don't be gross, but the cleanest hands in the world won't stop you inhaling an airborne virus sooooo 😷

@Mielke the good ole 'they're shipping the activists in from out of state!', great variation on "no true scotsman" 🤦‍♀️

2023-08-30

@seachanger ugh I'm sorry :( it's so hard too in a world where it can be very hard to actually get the rest you need

2023-08-30

@seachanger hope your recovery is going well 🙏 I am N95'd up always 😷 😷 😷

@feelnotes I'm originally from NJ so I'm supposed to be some kind of bagel connoisseur or something but I could not tell you lol

Planning a last minute trip to Valdez for the first time, anyone got recommendations on what to do there (and what to eat)?

2023-07-10

@Purrenrage yeah I've just stuck to the moose loop and such for a reason, sigh

2023-07-10

@redrummy @KrazyTheeAlaskan yeah the two places I've lived have been right off Dimond and right off Tudor lol....seems like there's a car crash on Tudor every other week, it's terrifying

2023-07-07

@KrazyTheeAlaskan You know I have heard a lot of people speak badly about Spenard but it's hard to know if you're talking to someone who's like "I had to see a poor person once, I'm basically an assault victim" vs normal people who have actual reasons 🤔

2023-07-07

@KrazyTheeAlaskan yup I currently live in Anchorage and plan to continue doing so (though for work reasons I'm going to probably have to go back to seattle for a few months this winter before moving back for real, long story...)
