You know, I could write a whole blog post about this—and I might—but I think we need to start addressing the very likely possibility that the *entire thesis* that “UI should get out of the way” and “apps should focus on content” is wrong.

Apps aren’t just for looking at photos or videos. They’re for navigating through these things, organizing them, editing them. The tools to do those things should not get out of the way. They should be clearly defined and separate from the content.

A screenshot of the Photos app on macOS Tahoe, with Liquid Glass toolbar buttons, icons, and a search field, which blend so much into the content that they’re barely noticeable.

A photo of a hand holding a leather wallet, out of which is popping a physical card that is an advertisement for the film F1: The Movie.

My belief is that using separate language allows for separate behavior.

If I speak a corporate language instead of regular-person language, I behave in corporate ways instead of regular-person ways.

Which means I’d accept things as corporate person that regular-person me would not accept.

So let’s not use corporate words like “learnings,” even — or especially when — at work.

Only one thing from WWDC has made me mad: in one of the videos, the presenter used the word “learnings” not just once but *twice* in the opening minutes. The word is “lessons,” Apple!

Lots of great stuff in this year’s WWDC. And some things I’ll wait-and-see about, and a bunch of things I don’t need to have an opinion about, which is good.

But, seriously, for real, this “learnings” thing pissed me the hell off.

It's the weekend, baby

Shaxs from Star Trek Lower Decks is pictured. He's a cartoon, because Lower Decks, besides being the best effing show ever, is a cartoon. Shaxs is a big burly man wearing his gold Star fleet uniform and also an apron over the front like he's doing some sort of art project or baking a nice sourdough. In each hand he's holding a broken bottle like that thing you do where you take a bottle and break off the bottom and then use it as a weapon. His eyeballs are bulging large, his brow is furrowed, and he looks absolutely unhinged with rage and anger. Closed caption reads, "Fighting fascism is a full time job!"

Star Trek The Original Series scene. We're in a corridor on the Enterprise. Two non series regular crew members are standing behind Spock in a bodyguard stance. (Tough guy bodyguard vibe, not Kevin Coster/Whitney Houston bodyguard vibe). Spock is wearing a dress uniform with extra flair, medals, and pins, a golden sash, and has a goatee. He's looking at Kirk, who seems a bit cocky and is wearing a glittery fancy gold, sleeveless uniform. Closed caption reads, "Terror must be maintained or the empire is doomed."

UI that can be clearly seen and told apart from the content helps me as a user to "focus on the content" because I don't have to search for it and try and understand what is content and what is UI.

Stable consistent UI stays put and isn't constantly hiding and appearing and rearranging itself lets me develop muscle memory and a spacial sense of "where" everything is, so I can learn to get used to the app.
Instead of having to constantly relearn where everything is because it rearranges itself.

Ever since iOS 7 I can't watch Apple's design videos without thinking they are built from a completely incorrect starting premise and goals.

"UI gets out of the way of your content"
"hides when not needed"
"only appears when the user needs them"

The details hardly matter when listening it feels like all of this has completely the wrong goals from the start.

Deep Space Nine scene. Jadzia Dax and Dr. Bashir are in their blue uniforms sitting in the operations center. Bashir is gazing lovingly at Dax. Dax is looking at something else entirely not named Bashir. Closed caption reads, "Men are far too emotional to be leaders."

@dmoren This has always been my № 1 argument against the special editions—artists worked hard on those shots, often inventing new technology. Future film students/enthusiasts should be able to see that.

@brentsimmons This is how I’ve been using YouTube for years. Works great. Easy to ⭐️ a video I want to watch later.

@acp Also, re: episode 10: all hail Lonny, true hero of the Rebellion. There’s a direct chain of events leading to the destruction of the Death Star and it all starts with him on that bench.

@acp PS: I also find subtitles distracting. I can’t keep myself from reading them and then I’m not paying attention to the rest of the frame.

@acp Do you think that Mon Mothma’s driver might have heard her speech and decided to go help her? The scene cleverly doesn’t give us a hint as to his intentions, but of course, Cassian couldn’t take the chance.

@gruber With apologies, if Goldfinger’s heist had taken place the day the film was released, and James’s onscreen line on how long the gold would be unsafe is correct, Fort Knox would have just recently become safe to re-enter, on 9/17/22.
