“Potemkin Understanding in Large Language Models”

A detailed analysis of the incoherent application of concepts by LLMs, showing how benchmarks that reliably establish domain competence in humans can be passed by LLMs lacking similar competence.

Grown men, he told himself, in flat contradiction of centuries of accumulated evidence about the way grown men behave, do not behave like this.

The biggest media failure on the bombing of Iran is that every article should have started with: "The Iran nuclear deal signed in 2015 effectively curtailed Iran's nuclear program until the US withdrew in 2018, under pressure from Israel".

Without this context, any commentary is worthless.

There’s a sentence at the very beginning of “The World Turned Upside Down” that, after eleven and some years living here, frankly just broke me. It’s this: “Popular revolt was for many centuries an essential feature of the English tradition.” I wonder where that spirit is (other than the remnants of it that show up only to get fanned into near-pogroms by all the usual suspects). Do you think that feature can yet be rediscovered, excavated, retrieved?

@lauren The novel "Redshirts" by @scalzi is not exactly about this, but has a broadly similar premise.

@carnage4life Seven federal holidays added since 1888 is hardly a trend. Personally, I think we need a lot more paid days off.

sgp.fas.org/crs/misc/R41990.pdf

Since 1888, Congress has added seven federal holidays, creating Decoration Day (now Memorial Day) in 1888, Labor Day in 1894, Armistice Day (now Veterans Day) in 1938, Inauguration Day in 1957 (quadrennially and only celebrated in the District of Columbia), Columbus Day in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday in 1983, and Juneteenth in 2021. In 1954, Armistice Day was broadened to honor Americans who fought in World War II and the Korean conflict, and the name
of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day.

@carnage4life it's a running joke in the travel industry how few holidays US workers get

This is so predictable, the only surprise is that he hadn’t already tried to kill Juneteenth sooner as a DEI holiday. He probably forgot it existed.

Yikes, the latest iteration of “the 2024 election was stolen” conspiracy crap is an order of magnitude more bonkers than the last. And, unsurprisingly, echos almost perfectly the bonkers stuff from 2020, with the parties reversed.

Just stop.

@kevinrothrock The term "syndrome" implies that there is something pathological about not wanting to send Americans off to die in a war against a force that poses no threat to the US. It's pretty messed up that the idea ever got popular.

@billclawson @pluralistic Essentially, political power in the US is now divided between a repressive death cult and a fundraising business, and the reason that the death cult keeps winning is because at least you can get people excited about joining a death cult.

"HoW dO We IMprOVe EdUcaTIoN??"

People act like it's a big mystery but it's not?

1. Better educated teachers.
2. More experienced teachers. (as in a ratio to new teachers)
3. Limit class size to 20 students aim for an average of 14.
4. Equip schools with sufficient materials eg: buildings that are safe and functional, internet that works, computers for students, you know the materials.

Most "education innovations" are trying to skip this stuff and use something else instead to save money.

This whole AI thing is like being in a restaurant with a fancy waiter who has one of those giant pepper shakers, only it's full of bird poop and anthrax and he keeps asking "would miss like a little AI on her pasta?" with every dish that comes out... and when you say "NO" he starts grinding anyway and won't stop until you physically knock him over.
