@kottke this feels disrespectful
I've been told I won't be back at iOS Konf this year (I do appreciate the quick "no") so there's a slot for you to speak - you have two more days - you should apply!
This announcement makes me optimistic about Apple design- I have so much respect for Sebastiaan https://www.macrumors.com/2026/01/28/sebastiaan-de-with-joins-apple/
@hyperjeff just moved on from a contract (I’ll post more on this at some point) so I have time for projects including returning to look at metal
@hyperjeff I don’t like the look of- particularly on the Mac, but I’m more bothered by the usability. I have to tap way more (those three dot menus) and sometimes I don’t see the thing I need to use because it’s been moved and is transparent
@hyperjeff ah good we’re on the same page. The UI stuff. I was pushing to see if you had thoughts on the concurrency stuff which I’m pretty happy with
@hyperjeff in what way?
The Newsletter:
How do we even wrap our heads around this assault on democracy? Also, the making of curling stones, a satisfying non-apology, women vs men in science research, resistance hats, Maggie's link to a guitarist who uses a ceiling fan for percussion, and Jeroen on being a Senior Developer in an AI World.
@Meyerweb I was at the Cleveland foundation for training. We watched the reports on tv and then they (appropriately) sent us home. So awful
Thank you Johanna for providing context and direction for us now
@tonyarnold will do - thanks
Australia help... I was talking to someone at iOS Conf SG - I don't remember who - and they suggested a drive along the coast in Australia - was that drive Sydney to Brisbane or Melbourne to Sydney?
@huwr thanks. I found out when I tried to listen to a playlist I thought I had downloaded on a flight to Singapore
Can you not download playlists for off line listening on the Apple classical app the way you can on Music? (And if so how)
@MakeAppPie good point that I hadn’t considered. Thank you
Immigration enforcement, my ass.
Bondi's letter below—essentially offering to stop attacking and murdering citizens in Minnesota in exchange for the state's voter rolls—shows what Trump, Miller et al. are really after:
They want to fuck with the nation's elections so that they never have to cede power and never have to answer for their crimes.
Trump needs to go. He needs to be impeached and removed. Now.
Second thought for conference organizers:
Once you know you are going to include a speaker, announce them (unless it's way early and you aren't selling tickets yet). If you're trying to get people to buy tickets to your conference - go ahead and let them know who will be there. I know you think you're making a greater impact by rolling out over time - that time shouldn't be a long one. Also, announcing well-known speakers early allows those speakers to help market your event. (2/2)
Two thoughts for Conference organizers -
Once you know you're not going to include a speaker, let them know. A quick "no" allows them to plan accordingly. I've heard from a couple of speakers lately who have seen conferences announcing speakers and they still haven't heard either way. If it's a maybe depending on other things - let them know that. Your speakers are your partners and spokespeople. (1/2)
@venkats I always think of the Erdos description when I read about your travels “another roof - another proof”
@RonJeffries I just got back from Singapore and overwhelmed
