@sundogplanets Personally, can't claim anything much older than 1960...

But my father, a physicist, cited a paper from 1675 (I know because he asked me to go and copy some pages from it in our university library, because theirs didn't have a copy and these rare books aren't really available for borrowing).

It was the oldest mention he could find of acid rain, in case anybody wonders.

“Five Guys are zero-indexed” is probably the most trivial technical fact I will learn today.

Why it might be handy to have Mastodon in #emacs

I keep my reading log in a plain text file. This means that I can write some code so that when I start reading a book, the message "I just started reading [title] by [author]" can automatically be posted to my Mastodon account by mastodon.el.

Star Trek The Original Series scene. We're in a corridor on the Enterprise. Two non series regular crew members are standing behind Spock in a bodyguard stance. (Tough guy bodyguard vibe, not Kevin Coster/Whitney Houston bodyguard vibe). Spock is wearing a dress uniform with extra flair, medals, and pins, a golden sash, and has a goatee. He's looking at Kirk, who seems a bit cocky and is wearing a glittery fancy gold, sleeveless uniform. Closed caption reads, "Terror must be maintained or the empire is doomed."

"Oh, well, I disagree with fash, but in this particular case I think they have a point".

No. Fuck that. Fruit of the poisonous tree - they didn't make that policy in good faith. They made that in service of their broader agenda of power and control.

"Well, maybe fash have a point rhat this DEI stuff and moral purity testing has gone too far"

No. Fuck that. Even when we examine our communities for how to keep them together and healthy, we don't adopt their language and euphemisms. We consider the people involved, who is being hurt, what are the relative privileges involved, and carefully and strategically manage the community to serve the needs of the community we want to see.

Just found out that my library has a poorly advertised lending library of things (games, toys, musical instruments, kitchen stuff). How cool!

We recently learned that the Western Pacific Railroad Museum has a Run-A-Locomotive program where you actually get to operate a steam (edit: not steam, diesel!) locomotive, and I think about that a lot. Like, A LOT.

@adr @redlibrarian yes, but the things that the province are responsible for are enumerated in the constitution. The feds had devolved those responsibilities to Nunavut (maybe?) but it could claw those back if it wanted to.

Just scroll down a bit. And I'll add, at the moment those pages are NSFW ... only the best people running stuff there now!
