DokuWiki is a simple to use and highly versatile Open Source wiki software that doesn't require a database.

The first hotfix for Librarian is out.
It fixes issues related to OS version reading, locale dependent dates and a few things in the new extension manager.
Reminder: you can help, even if you don't code. Especially right after a new release, we need volunteers helping with marking plugins as compatible (or incompatible).

Because similar questions keep popping up in the forum, I sat down a wrote a proper article explaining when and how you should DokuWiki on a Stick (when it's a personal setup) and when you shouldn't (when you want to collaborate with others).
This is mostly aimed at novice users. I tried to keep the lingo simple and added some graphics. Let me know if there are still things that miss the mark.
Reddit asks: what's your favorite DokuWiki plugin or template?

Let's make working on page hierarchies easier for plugin and template developers.
Today is the 30th anniversary of the launch of the first wiki by Ward Cunningham. A page that anyone could edit. Right from the browser. It was generally seen as a bad idea. What if people did bad things?
Originally to support the software development community in creating a repository of software design patterns, wikis were later used for many other goals (even an encyclopedia!), and became part of Web 2.0, together with blogs, fora and social media.
Thank you, @k9ox
Ten years ago, Sir Terry Pratchett died. But "A man’s not dead while his name is still spoken."
We carry his memory with each DokuWiki release being named after one of his many Discworld characters.
If you never read a book by him - now is a good time to do so!
This blog post touches my reality in ways I can relate to. "The reality of long-term software maintenance from the maintainer's perspective"
People often ask me what I do all days working full-time on a product that to them seemingly does the same thing now it did already ten years ago (at least). Maintenance is the gift that never stops giving.

@lapcatsoftware I use @dokuwiki. Open source, no database required, 20+ years old project but still actively developed. Public and private areas (in fact a more than decent ACL system). Namespaces are folders. Pages are text files. Trivial to backup. My only complaint is that it has its own syntax, which trips my markdown-trained brain 😅
@arnan that's 17 years of unpatched security issues in PHP and DokuWiki!
Today I stumbled across a DokuWiki running on release 2008-05-05 on #PHP 4.4.9 😱
I strongly advise against running such seriously outdated software (especially on the public Internet).
But I am also fascinated by it. The change log indicates that this wiki has been in constant use since back then, with the latest addition just a couple of days ago. I guess someone is strictly adhering to the rule of "never change a running system".
I certainly disagree with a lot in this article, but it's still a fun read: https://blog.cathoderaydude.com/doku.php?id=blog:dokuhacking_1
