Hey @autoperipatetikos, I listened to the podcast you mentioned. It was kinda ok, though the double empathy theory was touched on very briefly. Instead, Prof Baron-Cohen was given a lot of space to explain his view of empathy in autistic people. In my view, it is not that autistic people lack cognitive empathy and may show more affective empathy on the other hand. It is rather that the way in which we show empathy in general is different from that of non-autistic people. (1/2)
Importantly, it doesn’t frame autism as a problem to be solved. Instead, it asks critical questions about how we define, identify, and respond to neurodivergence — emphasising that barriers come from social and institutional structures, not autistic people. It challenges the deficit model and calls for a more inclusive and respectful way of thinking about difference.
