@sil as I understand it it’s a whole new thing. Yes GG was used more cross gov in the past (I use it for childcare stuff as well, though guess that’s tax in the end). I can only assume (hope) they had good reasons for starting over, who can say. It seems like a bit of a mess.

@sil I got a Government Gateway account many many years ago, it still works perfectly fine, and I'm going to keep on using it until they remove it and it all goes wrong then.

@gilest @phae As another data point, got the kid this one: currys.co.uk/products/majority and it seems to work well.

@sil We didn’t have a fridge for years after moving to Birmingham. Was fine. Only got one when a friend upgraded and we took their old one.

@gilest Sorry the sleeper wasn’t great. When we went to Prague in 2022, we didn’t use a sleeper (there weren’t any, anyway); we stayed in Nuremberg on the way out for a couple of nights, then Brussels for the night on the way back, which worked well, but of course takes a bit longer.

@sil Dunno how someone manages to be this wrong ;-)

@sil Norway has still been the best so far ;)

@jonty An interview question I like to give is to introduce many bad things into the front page, and then ask them to investigate the front page’s poor performance. Bonus if they find anything I hadn’t put there ;-)

@Edent Smarty have the same per-byte price (40GB not 32GB), also with a double data deal for anyone, no affiliates. I have a refer a friend code if that’s helpful to anyone: i.smarty.co.uk/yoZLA0 :)

@beep Lovely. And I say that as someone who wrote a lot of github.com/mysociety/fixmystre - which is still happily all in use on fixmystreet.com :-) (I especially like our use for redacting: fixmystreet.org/running/staff/ )

@sil @cheeaun I think it’s because MPEG-DASH is the equivalent international standard, whereas HLS is Apple-originated. ffmpeg can output both, both probably equivalent from your point of view.

@joelanman Wikipedia infoboxes use it, e.g. the "Repository" link on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_ (see the little pencil)

We used and contributed to it for our everypolitician.org/ project a few years ago.

@joelanman Wikidata? But presumably you already knew that one.

@jessie I had a day trip to London today for work and the train was only a little bit late and I chatted about FixMyStreet with a researcher and it was very sunny and I had a nice lunch and the other work stuff all went well and people in Kingston can look up their bin day okay! Let's just take it as long as it's here for.

@jessicahische that’s just a standard ChatGPT hallucinated response, though; it doesn’t “know” anything. In reality, you have to opt out, see help.openai.com/en/articles/57

@slightlyoff Sometimes you have to try and solve problems even before the users have them, such as Microsoft withdrawing the Bing Maps API (and its non-profit tier) in a few months, hohum!
