Considering going to the Canadian Aikido Federation fall seminar this year. It'll be expensive for a weekend because it's in a (very) remote area (even by Canadian standards) but I think it could be an interesting experience

@sleepyfox@hachyderm.io He is not American, though. He is French and followed Chiba to Japan by choice.
I've only done one seminar with him but it was reasonably standard aikido. It didn't have the roughness/brutality Chiba is known for.
@sleepyfox@hachyderm.io That sounds about right and what I'd expect.
The author of the link is french. I should go back and read his take in the earlier parts of the series for another take since he seems to have a fondness for him..
Always a pleasure to go to #Mathildedal for the annual #aikido weapons seminar, courtesy of Petteri #Silenius (7th Dan). Sadly only one practise for me this weekend as so many things going on. But it’s also a lovely, picturesque village for a day trip with a couple nice restaurants and cafes, their own brewery, a tidy wee harbour and quality bakery.
@meisterluk@mathstodon.xyz I'm not sure what you're looking for. They're just the same type of stretching you might do at the start of the class, done at the end. Fold at the waist and touch the floor/your ankles, spread your legs on the floor and lean forward from the hips, etc.
I missed parts 1-5, but still found part 6 of this bio of Chiba interesting. I never knew of his involvement with the IAF, I just know him from his reputation as being rough.

@meisterluk@mathstodon.xyz cooldown stretches are stretches you do at the end of exercise (as opposed to warmup stretches at the beginning).. they're supposed to be good for improving flexibility and reducing the risk of injury. We have one sensei who incorporates them into the end of his classes.
I think I pulled a muscle in my shoulder last night.. doing the cooldown stretches at the end of class. :/
#TIL: An #Aikido seminar is like rehearsing as a musician in a foreign orchestra with an unknown conductor. The instrument and sheet music are familiar, but the style is completely different.
I appreciate the challenge and the openness with which experienced Aikidoka, unknown to me, help expand my abilities.
Picard management tip: If a crew member needs to become more responsible, give them more responsibility.
At dinner my son asked if next time we go to Japan we can go to hombu dojo.
It's hard to say no to that.
Good seminar with Kuribayashi. Lots of interesting points to take in. I like senseis that go around and let everyone feel their technique. His was very smooth..

It is finally seminar day! 🎉

I started watching videos of this year's All Japan Aikido Demonstration to see if there's anyone I'd like to visit if I ever go back to Japan but came to the unfortunate conclusion that I like them all
@vagrantc@floss.social it makes sense. They've already got down and done the entry for you.
(Of course, if they're diving you could also [try to] just step out of the way.)
@vagrantc Ah yes, the good ol' ... (checks Wikipedia) 回転投げRotary Throw, eh?
