@quantensalat In my physics master I had two different independent lectures on field theory one in condensed matter and one in high energy / particle physics. Even though the concepts taught in both are super related it felt like I was learning two different things because I think the language is diverging a bit. I would have liked to have a book that first gets over the basics and then derives both from the same basics.

@gsuberland I think the "speed of light" is a bit of a misnomer, because the speed of light is so much more relevant then just for electro magnetics. It is the speed of causality in the universe and enters almost everywhere.

In one of the more memorable physics lectures our lecturer derived that in every system obeying a few symmetries there has to be a single uniqe constant. I sadly forgot the exact arguemts...

So I would argue that the speed of light is the real basic constant.

@niconiconi Have you seen all the Radeon Instinct Mi25 dropping on UK ebay? They sell for about 40GBP. But you can also get 10 of them for something like 250GBP...

I was thinking about jamming 10 of these into a workstation and see how far that gets me. But then I realised that the cost of all the PCIe risers would probably be more expensive than the cards themselves.

I am trying to assemble an AliExpress 100W 100MHz amplifier following this description. http://g4fev.atspace.com/mrf186linear.htm When describing soldering the power FET it mysteriously states:

DO remember to unplug your soldering iron each time you make a joint or whilst cleaning up the device prior to installation.

Does anybody know what this is about? Is this some ESD thing? I am so puzzled...

@gigabecquerel I want to play with pulsed high power, where the reduced resistance at low temperatures matters, but the project is still in the early planning phase :D
