Studying and researching mathematics at university. Interested in the intersection of dynamical systems, probability theory, numerical methods, and simulations broadly, with a strong emphasis on theory. Currently researching extinction dynamics in ecosystems combining it all!

Developed the plant-growing simulation game Idu and the game engine behind it in Rust with @johann, occasional contributor now.

Iโ€™m open about this because I think itโ€™s worse when youโ€™re struggling in silence and feel like youโ€™re grieving projects and community put on hold. Itโ€™s not something you can keep hidden even if you wanted to as it affects all aspects of your life 24/7. But itโ€™ll be okay as it no longer feels like wandering in the dark! Iโ€™m grateful to you all ๐Ÿ’œ

As a bonus, please try this at home: strawberry jam on the bottom, (oat) milk, and matcha topped with white chocolate shavings. Banana to scale.

Hi all, long time no see. I wish I could be online more and that it didnโ€™t seem like I abandoned the game and everything, but you mightโ€™ve seen me post sometimes that Iโ€™m sick. Well, I found out that Iโ€™ve been sick with an autoimmune disease for years and itโ€™s been progressing until now, however Iโ€™m finally getting treatment. Thereโ€™s lots of sadness and guilt over diminishing ability over the years. I might be gone but Iโ€™m fighting to come back and make all the things!

@toadkarter This depends on your current background. For example, starting from elementary algebra moving up to functions and then โ€œactualโ€ pure maths is very underrated if you havenโ€™t done math in a decade. Or, if you have just studied school or uni level calculus then the recommendations would be very different as to where to go next. In most game dev, only a small subset of linear algebra is used and basic mechanics.

@jj @boarders @jonmsterling I agree with you completely. I wasnโ€™t good at getting my point across: remote learning, as demanded from unis during the pandemic and letting lecturers carry all of the weight, was bad because it couldnโ€™t have went better since there was nothing to support it, but thatโ€™s the reason why so many lecturers are completely burnt out *and* institutions are throwing out the idea completely. Info being available freely is beside the point.

@boarders @jonmsterling Basically there needs to be a lot of funding to support proper remote learning but the way it was done during the pandemic in regular unis is not it and it's good that we are throwing that out, yet we should be thinking how to make it better and get funding for developing these programs because there are a lot of people who wouldn't be able to study otherwise. Just having lectures recorded and lecture notes online is nothing in comparison to what we could have.

@boarders @jonmsterling Most universities are not designed for remote learning like e.g The Open University is, which functions very differently from MOOC-type courses or like whatever universities were forced to do during the pandemic. We have small lectures/tutorials where students are actively engaged, we have our own books that are externally reviewed all the time and are very well-made, and most students (esp those who continue year after year) are super motivated. 1/2

bananas.org forums are still down but I want to share this big ass banana I've grown in the past 2 years.

I almost killed it with root rot in the beginning and decided to grow it hydroponically, as it's much easier to control root rot this way.

Quick stats:
It's about 2.5m tall (with the pot) and the largest leaf is more than 1m long.
The thickest stem has a girth of 43cm.

@chrisamaphone from my POV, theorem provers are actual โ€œsecond brainsโ€ insomuch as they totally transform how the user thinks about mathematics, about programming, about those things we call formal - this transformational aspect of the technology is currently still under-appreciated imo

@j_bertolotti As far as I understand, instead of using a known activation function in a neural network and back propagation, the state of each node in every layer (as a matrix) is modeled as a dynamical system with forward propagation? And so layer-by-layer activation functions are replaced by the differential equations?

Iโ€™m honestly surprised it hasnโ€™t been done before, I think Iโ€™m missing something. Iโ€™d like to try implementing this soon, wonder how itโ€™ll go.

@j_bertolotti could be relevant to Yann LeCunโ€™s research. Learning directly, in real-time, from the environment.

@rmounce @mario_angst_sci Itโ€™s still quite depressing to see that published, peer-reviewed papers include the most telltale AI phrases, meanwhile academic competition increases (e.g PhD applicants are already supposed to have published research if theyโ€™re looking at competitive positions) so it will only get worse.

Before I'm expelled from this instance for not posting gamedev as much anymore, I'm sure you could use this in computer graphics somewhere ๐Ÿ˜‡

The results are what I would expect but maybe some statistician will prove me wrong. Please do if it's the wrong direction! Also, I changed my description/comment to say "mean_X/mean_Y", as the ratio of X/Y isn't the same

I have mean entropy values for a structural collapse threshold over 100 trials, and mean maximum entropy values for the ecosystems I am simulating. They have their own standard deviations. Since they are covariant, I calculated their covariance matrix and I'm hoping that using this approach to Fieller's theorem would work; found only one implementation that followed arxiv.org/pdf/0710.2024.pdf, but it would require doing the same calculation for 100 samples, whereas I'm using a precomp matrix

@emi_cpl We tend to forget that media in general basically means mobile clicker games or something like a Netflix game, maybe theyโ€™ll remember the most popular PC game titles and that will be a niche on its own already, then indies practically donโ€™t exist whatsoever.

So when people think AI โ€œrevolutionizedโ€ games they might as well find the crypto games revolutionary.

Itโ€™s like the iceberg meme
