We found that the PLC code actually contained logic that would lock up the train with bogus error codes after some date, or if the train wasn't running for a given time. One version of the controller actually contained GPS coordinates to contain the behaviour to third party workshops.

It was also possible to unlock the trains by pressing a key combination in the cabin controls. None of this was documented.

@solalnathan If you have open source suggestions, we will endeavour to try those for future studies!

Believe me, being a privacy researcher the choice of using Office365 isn't taken lightly. It's mostly to "avoid the hellfire of central university IT"

@solalnathan

Hi Solal! I get what you're saying but the University has strict data protection requirements for user studies that we can't use software that hasn't gone through a data protection assessment.

We could start the process for self-hosted alternatives, but it could take a long time. Closed source is almost a no-go, but open source/self-hosted options could work with enough advance time. We have our own servers that are professionally managed

My friend saw this incredible statue in Dublin Castle and the more I looked at it the more I read into the meaning–about modern society ignoring classical scholarship, power-to-the-people, etc.

But! It turns out it's a modern take on David v Goliath, and it's 3D printed! So cool. voxelmatters.com/3d-printed-sc

Has anyone written up a concise howto/best practices on ethical use of language models in academic research workflows – and ethical risks therein?

@RaphaelWimmer @aurelien the system of science is embedded in the system that enables it :)

if we eliminated ordering and just mark everything sets that would be nice

electronic Max Van Kleek 🌈emax@hci.social
2023-06-21

@aurelien @RaphaelWimmer the problem with trying to list contributions is that it causes people to try to brutally quantify co authors contributions and do each other violence

i would be in favour of dropping ordering altogether but that has no chance of happening

@RaphaelWimmer there should be no problem with having n first-author co-authorship

the academic jobs market is a terrible ratrace and i have heard colleagues say 'x doesn't count, they weren't the first author lead'

bad
