for me, at least, some part of it is the idea that degrowth will happen whether we want it to or not-- right now our main choice is whether we want to do it intentionally or let the chips fall as they may (they will fall mostly towards the people who already have lots of resources)

i dont actually know if i know what the formal way to describe 'degrowth' is bc everyone i've talked to or read seems to have a different opinion on it

@gatesvp like, whether you think its good to put those people out of work or not, as we run out of easy to extract resources or people to extract them, the way capitalism works, it will end up putting those people out of work eventually. for me part of thinking about degrowth is considering how and why that will happen, and how to mitigate it for the people it happens to (as opposed to current political reality, which says "it'll work out in the end on a societal level, so")

@gatesvp yeah, i don't think 'stop spending money' on entertainment is an actual workable proposition or anything. i don't know that i have one. but i think it's worth considering that this is an aspect of modern society that we currently expend a great deal of resources on that will probably have to be a major target of degrowth at some point, whether that's in an intentional way, or it happens unintentionally by people following those principles

The Second-Order Streisand Effect is a social phenomenon where if a party makes an effort to censor information, discussion and news about the censoring attempt paradoxically leads to an increased awareness of Barbara Streisand, a musician whom most Zoomers would probably have never heard of if not for the Streisand Effect

(this isn't a "call to action" or trying to tell you to stop consuming entertainment-- just something that weighs on my mind to consider)

@gkrnours yeah communal studios! i've wished we had more of those for a while now, both for artmaking and for crafting or working on chores that ppl need sometimes but not always

i honestly think this is part of why degrowth is such a hard sell to most ppl

which sucks!! bc i like a lot of things that took big budgets!!! but if we're serious about reallocating resources according to the actual need, we probably should start by getting used to our entertainment being significantly smaller in scale

if money is just a way to abstract how we allocate our resources, then 'big budget' entertainment starts to feel like a travesty when people are suffering due to lack of food or shelter

I have a weird, maybe dumb question and I'm not entirely sure how I would go about finding the answer to it

Can we make stone? Like in the way we can make plastic, or metals, or other substances. Can we make it, or only shape existing stone?

Can we synthesize different types of stone in a lab? With the right building blocks and tools, could I make metamorphic or sedimentary stone?
