@Myphatself Normally, yes. I customized the firewall to block exactly that (which I admit made their ability to help me diagnose issues with the unit more difficult ...)

@Myphatself Was Ziply. Spectrum is up there with Comcast at the top of my "I'd rather use IPoAC" list ...

@Myphatself following up ... Turns out the ISP-provided router was failing. And, unlike the tech who installed it 2 years ago told me, I didn't even need to use their hardware!

Pulled it from my network and got a (better) TP-Link unit. Sadly it meant half of my network (including my masto instance) was offline for most of the day :-(

2026-02-06

Well that was fun.

For those who didn't see the shenanigans on #birdsite - turns out my router was garbage. You know, the one the ISP said was _required_ to use their network? It was trash and killing my connection.

Pulled it and ran from the ONT straight to my Eero and had network just fine. But all of my NUCs are hardwired ... so needed a new TP-Link router in front of my 1GB switch before I could get k8s back online.

So glad to have things live again.

Well this is fun. Anywhere from 15-80% packet loss from my home network to some domains. Nothing critical. Just ... Google, Amazon, and GitHub.

ISP isn't being super useful. "Must be your hardware."

Thing is - it was only impacting me. Not my wife. It occurred to me she's on a VPN 100% of the time. Zero issues.

Routed my machines through Mullvad. Zero issues.

Totally not an issue on my end.

Awaiting Tier 2 technician call now ... Fun times.

My network has been flakey today. I figured it was due to Google DNS and tried to switch to Cloudflare. No effect.

Then I remembered I use Tailscale and had that globally routing my DNS through NextDNS.

I love their ad blocking, but disabling that integration just sped up my network queries 10-fold.

That's a personal record :-)

Here's the deal, folks. I desperately need to make a mortgage payment, and only two clients would allow me to do that.

You can pay me now, and you'll have me booked for whenever you need me this year. If I can't find any improvements, get your money back hirejeffc.me/#auditing-product

@finlaydag33k if you ever have cause to be in this part of the world (PHP Tek in May?) I'm definitely willing to share.

@finlaydag33k I particularly like Kona coffee (from a couple of specific roasters). But had an experience with a family member that showed how my taste was so different.

I'd forgotten to grind beans one night (kids sleep late so I grind in the eve) so an in-law instead made a cup of Folgers instant. "Don't worry about grinding anything. This tastes the same."

If you can't tell the difference between Folgers instant and my $45/lb Kona beans ... don't touch my coffee.

2026-01-28

@finlaydag33k Years ago a friend was a manager at a local SBux. She loved the job itself but hated the coffee and explained they _intentionally_ over-roasted the beans. Doing so erases the subtle differences you can taste in one bean vs another ... and helps make for a consistent cup of (burnt and bitter) coffee regardless of which store you go to.

It makes sense. But I hate it.

This is my first Starbucks drip coffee in years. I forgot how awful it really is.

The best thing about 2020 forcing us all to work from home (and using my own machines for both drip and lattes) is that my taste in beans has definitely changed.

I'm so sorry for those who think this is the best coffee can be 😞

RE: tekton.network/@ericmann/11596

So this new thing is a dumb Wordle-inspired game I built. You guess coin flips. Five every day. The more you're correct, the more points you win - guess wrong and you're penalized.

Come back tomorrow to try again 🙂
