@markb Ah, that's true! However, beware leaning on that too much, because people acting in bad faith (eg. trolls, abusers) will exploit that instinct in people.

If it happened only once and you think it's ignorance, it's probably ok to forgive. If it has happened multiple times, esp. if it has been brought up, at some point it becomes the other person's responsibility. I'm assuming we're talking about adults here BTW.

@markb Not sure if this is an actual question or just thinking out loud, but in case it's the former (I've been there so I know it can be confusing): my take is that there has to be at least regret, and an implication that there is honest personal effort towards avoiding doing the bad thing again. Ideally an actual apology, but I don't think it's necessary if the other elements are in place.
