@rowlandm One *test* at a time is a very popular way to go.

Just spent an hour trying to debug a rules engine not doing what I want and I’m pretty sure the culprit is it wants a percentage as a number 0-100, not 0-1.

The XKCD about how much of the UK was dug up for coal mining (3 inches) was cool.
But I wondered: What would it look like as a cube? My maths (probably wrong) says it’d be about 18km^3.
Plonked onto London, that cube would run from Enfield down to South Croydon, from Creekmouth across to Southall, and the height would be… twice that of Mt Everest!

More simply, in terms of Everest, it’s probably about 33 Everests. The largest mountain on earth, dug up and burned 33 times over. And that’s just one country’s coal production. 😥

Quiz: What is the name of Melania Trump’s new biography?

Wife: Oh, I think it’s just one word.

15yo: Is it “Help” ?

@GeePawHill Sorry to hear this man. It sounds tough. Our family of 4 all mask any time we’re indoors in a space that’s not ours alone. It would definitely strain things if one of us stopped doing that and risked our “bubble”.
It is tiring being the different person all the time, talking louder all the time, rejecting invitations to inside events all the time. We take solace in the fact that we’re all smart people who grok science and health and are doing the sensible risk-aware thing. It is everyone else that to us is acting weird given the situation. (Which, to be fair, they are not being kept informed about properly.)
We all wish the pandemic was over. We wish clean air had become an obvious thing to make standard. We wish staying home and isolated when you’re sick remained a social norm.
One thing that keeps me going is that I’ve hardly had a sniffle in 4 years. Meanwhile I see so many around me who are regularly sick, like every 3 or 4 weeks they’re “just not feeling great” or “just have some minor virus”… and then they’re out of action for a week. I think maybe twice in my adult life I’ve been sick for an entire week, but now it’s happening to many people many times a year and they just think it’s normal. I’m not a fitness freak but I value my health highly and I do not want to be sick as badly or as often as I see in others around me.
One thing you could do practically if you’re feeling at risk at home is maximise ventilation and, if that’s sometimes difficult, get a low-noise air filter, or a couple. That’s what we do on the rare occasions that we need to have someone in our house.
But yeah, it is bloody tiring, protecting myself and my family from a world that has accepted being constantly infected by and spreading without care an airborne, immunity-deregulating, brain-damaging virus. I hear you. 😔

"Now more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence.
We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us.
But in times of crisis, the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers.
We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe."

Highly relevant words for the upcoming USA election.

Given the choice, which way would you prefer to work most of the time?

A meme depicting two images:

1. A software developer sitting alone in a cubicle with headphones on, captioned: "LONE WOLF"

2. A dev team gather around a workstation, captioned "WOLF PACK"

@jasongorman Pack every time.

Absolutely wild how many companies are adopting AI notetaking apps for meetings.

Y'all'er just chill sending your planning, product direction and revenue details to some random third party in exchange for them doing the low value task of halfassing note taking for you?

The Liberals and Nationals believe preventing them from creating and distributing deepfake videos that show the Prime Minister and their other political rivals saying something they never said would impinge on their freedom of speech. I wish this was satire. It is not.

@futurebird Have you seen the SNL skit about this? Very funny.

@MinecraftMemery My 11yo appreciate this

@twasink Not sure how your plan stops people buying EVs, which is undoubtedly what the coalition has been tasked with.

2024-10-04

@karanj I usually end up buying non-off-the-shelf specs, so I’m probably out of luck.

@s3_gunzel Nice idea. Looks like there's no models in there with extra memory, though, which I always insist on.

Need a new MacBook Air this year. Does the Australian Apple Store do Black Friday deals? How good are they? And do they combine with education discounts?

2024-10-02

@xankarn I’m not sure anything could tell me more about someone’s dedication to their work and respect of their colleagues than “So and so’s AI transcriber has joined the meeting” (instead of them)
