"Leaving Google has actively improved my life

In May of 2023, Google introduced “AI overviews” into their search engine.1 This followed years of decisions leading to worse search quality and the consummation of their mission to answer every query on Google instead of sending you to outside sites. This was upsetting but something I groaned about and then moved on.

Then, in January of 2026, Google introduced generative AI into their Gmail inboxes. For me, this was the last straw. I decided it was time to leave Google.

"Why light-weight websites may one day save your life

Imagine being in a situation where you have limited internet access: your internet is slow, or you're relying on a small data bundle, or you are stuck in the middle of nowhere with spotty coverage.

Now imagine that suddenly, you need help. Emergency medical information, food resource locations, shelter, assistance, anything.

Then, in your emergency state, you look up resources on the internet and find... a website that first requires you to load 500 MB of JavaScript, and lord knows what else.

Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's ReactJS.
💅🏻

(Post-publication addendum: 500 MB is an exaggeration even for React. But you catch my drift.)"

"Continuous sleep is a modern habit, not an evolutionary constant, which helps explain why many of us still wake at 3 am and wonder if something's wrong. It might help to know that this is a deeply human experience.

For most of human history, a continuous eight-hour snooze was not the norm. Instead, people commonly slept in two shifts each night, often called a "first sleep" and "second sleep."
