Happy New Year 2026!
I’m a programming buff with formal training in journalism. I worked in Silicon Valley, now I’m based in Prague.
I build games, teach programming, explain things, and create silly software experiments.

Merry Last 3% Of The Year, everyone!
Good news, everyone! I eeked out some time just before my Christmas vacation to release an update to the GIANT ROBOT GAME playtest.
# v0.2.98+125 *VALIANT*
* Shooting from above does massively more damage. This leads to more strategic thinking and will hopefully unlock some sweet terrain-based tactics.
* Part labels on 3D models now show additional info, such as the current structural integrity of parts to be repaired, or relative chance to hit of parts to be targeted.

@ondra The sad (or maybe hopeful?) thing is that the Google employees I know actually do care. It seems to be the top brass' direction (and apparently not enough push back or managing-up from middle management) that has this effect.
For example, I bet the gmail engineers and designers of these two massive buttons weren't happy about working on this non-feature. But they also don't care enough to quit about it, and top management doesn't hear their qualms.
@sesivany I take your point. People apparently don't hate this enough to leave right now. But the thing about losing goodwill is that things happen gradually, and then suddenly. I think that a good business leader should be sensitive to this. The fact that the data doesn't show enough outflow to worry about _today_ doesn't mean you're not going to see something much worse in the future.
We all know the rationale of shoving AI on people. I just thing 2 massive buttons around every email is stupd
Prague's "La Défense" (the highrises in the distance) looks especially monumental and Blade Runner-y today thanks to the exactly right altitude and thickness of cloud cover. It's easy to imagine the buildings continuing well above the clouds (when in fact they only just reach them).
@zoul how do you deal this all the places where your former email is your account handle? Did you switch them all in one go or are you doing it only as needed?
I blew my stack today. Here's the result:
