All these rumors about Apple buying Perplexity while Mistral is just sitting there putting out damn good models suitable for on-device inference.

Updates to the UI in Betas 2 are very encouraging! They're chippin' away at a lot of the issues

Are we all using ghost these days for blogs even if we’re not doing newsletters?

Mockup time! What could be a reasonable "middle ground" between the Mac OS design that we have today and the radical Liquid Glass design we saw this week from ?

Disclaimer: this does not attempt to solve all the issues of modern Mac OS design, such as cramped toolbars caused by full-height sidebars and combining the toolbar with the title bar. I feel like the Apple of today is too far gone to do anything about those.

Read on to see what I actually tried to address.

@alexheath apple can’t continue this way. They need to do what Meta did and spend to get back in the game. I think Mistral would be a terrific strategic acquisition

I love this sign Indivisible made for the protest tomorrow.

A black and white sign in a slightly distressed, narrow sans serif font reading, in all caps, I HAVE FRIENDS EVERYWHERE.

This blog post has some interesting insights to the changes Apple has made to their model over the last year.

- re-trained using multiple techniques and using larger more specialized LLMs for guided learning
- focus on "high quality" data when scraping from the web and licensed content
- On-device model remains a ~3B parameter model
- Benchmarks show AFM-on-device is still middle of the pack for performance
- server-based model is still very behind GPT-4o and the like

@never_released Damn that is pathetically small....

@anildash you deserve all the time to rest and recharge (and dodge blue shells) that you can get.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can help meet the moment out there. I’m not a community activist or political organizer. I’m just a decent coder who cares a lot about our information systems and our democracy. Find a way to bring together other like-minded devs and product people and media professionals to make things that help the people on the front lines. Democracy Scrums.

As much as I appreciate that iPadOS 26 has a spatial finder now where windows will restore to their positions and sizes after I close them, there needs to be a way to reset apps back to full screen. Maybe a shortcut to detect when I take the iPad out of the keyboard case?

@joesteel Oh cool, someone made another browser extension for chatgpt 🙄

I don't know if I had a bug in my iPad or something but ever since I put iPadOS 26 Developer Beta 1 on my iPad, its battery life has been *significantly* better??

iPad multitasking has taken one huge step forward but several small steps back. Gone is split view and slide over that I used a lot. Also gone is the four-finger gesture to go between apps. Time for a feedback

This video on Liquid Glass has me way more worried about the future of the design language than before.

The distracting refraction and chromatic aberration that makes legibility difficult seem to be the parts they're most proud of. They even used the word "gel-like" to describe the squishiness of it.

Yuck.

@marcoarment Many of the issues with this UI are fundamental to its design. The refraction and chromatic aberration that make it a usability nightmare are the things they are talking about the most in the Liquid Glass intros.

I want to offer a take: Apple might not be as far behind on AI as we think.

Apple is certainly behind on LLMs for Chatbots and data retrieval, for sure, but that's only one implementation of AI/ML.

We saw a lot of stuff today under "Apple Intelligence" that was far reaching. From mundane UI flourishes to deep natural language parsing and work in image, sound and text recognition. This is all AI/ML. It's not the sexy ChatGPT stuff, but it is real and it is being used in a real product

Seems like Apple is embracing other models for AI features, at least in XCode. This is the way
