Sometimes a bit of hardware changes a whole industry, only it takes a bit for the industry to realize it. This week’s Techpod is about the Intellimouse Explorer and how it changed mice forever.

Saw Russian Circles last night and they were awesome and frightening Main reflection for me: the amount of noise a drummer can get out of a small kit. Old mate last night had snare, rack tom, floor tom and a kick, two crash cymbals, a ride and a high hat. That's it. And this sort of thing comes out youtube.com/watch?v=mi-Lo4cHjJ0

@evcricket ok thanks I will check it out. Are we close to having vehicle to grid options yet?

Hey @evcricket - if you were installing an EV charger at home this year - what unit would you choose? Where is a good source of info on the options?

All media and news outlets that are unsure if it's worth setting up a #Mastodon account because they won't get enough followers: Take a look at Ars Technica (@arstechnica).

Ars established their account fairly recently (Apr 25, 2023) and have quickly gained a large following -- 118K followers!

- They actively post
- Their account is verified
- Their homepage has a link to their Mastodon account

Yes, media, you can be successful on Mastodon.

ABC walks away from Twitter (about time). I wonder if they have considered standing up their own fediverse server? It would be great for their journos to have the umbrella of their own server to give them credibility under their editorial standards - and maybe protect them from some of the faceless attackers abc.net.au/news/2023-08-09/abc

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

When I was at uni, a woman I knew sang this Sinead song at an open mic night and it was powerful to hear. Has been a favourite since then youtube.com/watch?v=n14lwdpYkAA

I need your help…

NPR is leaving Twitter but they are planning to focus on Instagram

We need to tell them to join the Fediverse

Many of their journalists’ accounts, as well as their main account, haven’t been active on mastodon. Tell them how much we need them here. (In fact, they should have their own instance)

Use the link, tell NPR we are waiting for them here and spread the word far and wide:

There's a bit of dumb commentary around what it means, third house of parliament etc. But it's just not like that. I found it quite sorrowful and pleading more than anything. "our people are downtrodden, can we please talk about it". I interpret the Voice as not a power of veto, but a review that can talk about how a proposal might impact indigenous people. This sound pretty good to me, and loads of indigenous people are telling me it's good, so I'm even more certain to vote Yes when we can.

I'm long overdue for an #introduction. Hi.

I was one of the first editors at Ars Technica, the EIC of Maximum PC for a while, started Tested.com and the YouTube channel. I've hosted a bunch of podcasts, made a bunch of videos, I hosted a talk show in VR, and made cartoons in front of live studio audiences.

Now I co-host @techpod, The FOSS Pod (fosspod.content.town), and work on The Anacrusis at Stray Bombay. I live in Northern CA with my wife and daughter.

I've approved about 100 new accounts so far today for the Techpod Mastodon. Gonna let that sit over night and see what happens to the server load as people migrate their accounts over.

Since I announced it on twitter - I will say it here as well for people who already moved - DM me if you want a free key to The Anacrusis. We are giving out 100 keys this weekend for people who are on and using Mastodon.

As Twitter becomes more and more caustic, this is our putting our money where are mouth is and offering a little encouragement.

This is over!
