New article on Wizard magazine and comics fandom in the 1990s and 2000s published in Popular Communication. If you remember Wizard and/or 90s comics culture, either with fondness or shame, you won't want to miss this one.

Kalervo, Anna, and I have been talking about Wizard for a couple years now, and it's great to finally have something out.

Simultaneously fascinated and troubled to see the “sparkles” emoji (✨) emerging as a visual code for generative AI in user interfaces. As emanata in manga, it signifies awe, beauty, stylishness, pride. Here, it seems to be … pixie dust?

Let’s not give credence to the idea that this technology is sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from magic.

The settlement is puny but this is super important. Air Canada is responsible for the inaccurate information from its chatbot.

Super super important. They tried to Weasel out of it too. If this went the other way there's no such thing as corporate accountability anymore.

Is Publons a scam? I signed up and my inbox is flooded with review requests for articles I have no expertise in. I just got an invitation to review for Earthquake Engineering and Resilience

Like that's terrifying that I would be a candidate for peer review.

Buildings gonna fall down.
