RE: dice.camp/@johnzajac/115845954

I spent a lot of time in the 90s working on Y2K. It wasn't a huge panic. It was just a slice out of everything else we spent auditing code. It wasn't "spend 80 hours a week fixing this." It was just boring. Incredibly boring. And we made it be ok by being bored and fixing stuff.

And the one thing I never thought would happen was that people would say it was never a problem. Oh good grief, it was a problem. All over. We just fixed it. Like we thought grownups should do when there's a problem.

And yeah, you can see where this is going. And it is going.

@mwichary The "analogtv" module in XScreenSaver almost does that; it's a circuit-level simulation of NTSC and its various faults, so it's at the "analog logic" layer rather than the "physics" layer.

You can see the effect in action on most of the images posted on the @dnalounge account.

I had to. Sorry / you're welcome.

KC Green's "This is fine" meme dog, but he's saying "This is pine" and he's overlaid on a screenshot of the pine mail client – a white screen with black pixelated text corresponding to different menu entries of the mail client.

I shouldn’t have to say this, but please don’t post direct links to the elementary OS ISO, especially on release day. This is my only form of income and I really don’t make a lot of it. I want to keep making elementary OS as my job, but when you bypass our pay-what-you-can ask it cuts directly into the revenue I rely on to pay rent and buy food. The vast majority of people already pay nothing when they download. Please don’t take away the biggest opportunity I have for folks to support my work

Since I am stuck with maintaining the pkg-config autoconf macros, I have updated them to suggest using pkgconf instead of pkg-config, since pkg-config is clearly not maintained anymore.

Users are better served by being pointed to a maintained pkg-config implementation...

the g in gobject stands for glib, and the g in glib stands for gtk, and the g in gtk stands for gimp, however the g in gimp stands for gnu, so really the g in glib stands for gnu, but you shouldn't confuse it with gnulib, which is developed by the gnu project, who shouldn't be confused as the developers of glib, which is the gnome project, in which the g also stands for gnu

I'm currently looking for one or more volunteers to maintain the Openmoko USB PID + OUI service at github.com/openmoko/openmoko-u as the existing maintainer is no longer available. This is a service providing free USB Product IDs and Ethernet MAC addresses for the #FOSS and #OSWH community. Volunteers have to review of the PRs fulfill FOSS/OSHW licensing requirements before merging PRs. #usb #opensource

What's behind the little paper door for today's ?

wireshark.org/
@wireshark

In the 90s capturing network packets was kind of a pain. Then Ethereal came along (now ) and suddenly anyone could capture and analyze network traffic, even from Windows!

A whole generation or two of sysadmins learned the guts of what network traffic actually looked like and how it worked by running and reading Wireshark captures.

It's still out there, happily ingesting packets.

The worst thing here is we almost certainly lack functioning mechanisms to hold anyone meaningfully to account for these crimes. These were not heat-of-battle excesses or unwise orders from mid-level officers. This was premeditated, national policy, crafted and approved by the Secretary of Defense and the President.

We are in a very dark place.
