@BeAware i believe mastodon will grow slowly and I extra my because it is the one network that isn't at the whim of a billionaire or because of a government leveraging a billionaire. I'm not suggesting a black box algorithm at all, but one that you can tweak yourself to see new content, and that other people will tweak so they can get to see yours. *I admit I'm a bit out of the loop, some of this may be happening already

One issue is that there's no fine grained control of what you see from people you follow. You get the whole person, Whitty insights into your shared political views and relentless updates on Mr Bunny, the ironically named guinea pig. One doesn't want to unfollow or mute everything but I do because there's only so much guinea pig one can take :D

I have just noticed though that's there now flavours of public posting that mention algorithms so maybe I need to expire that a bit

Might be an unpopular view but I think #mastodon needs an algorithm, or at least a mechanism to control what stuff I'm fed. I wonder if there's a way to use AI to help with this, or that using a seldhammer to crack a nut?

We have PR, but are still mirred in 2 party politics. I've been wondering how uncommon this is in countries with proportional representation, and about the forces that keep the status quo and how they benefit.

1) Joe needs to pack SCOTUS in December while Kamala can still serve as tie-breaker in the Senate.
2) Joe needs to resign on Jan. 1 and allow Kamala to become President #47 for 3 weeks.
3) President Harris needs to issue a series of popular executive orders that Trump will have to reverse on day 1.

Kamala will become one of the most consequential and precedent-setting Vice Presidents and Presidents in US history.

@timrichards I agree, but I think *the story* of the last 100 years when viewed with hindsight will be that of keeping us peasants divided. The great conservative achievement of our time is getting people to vote against their best interests. It's been achieved with control of the media - print, then TV, then social. It's now laughably easy to sow dissent, shit! We're programmed to argue the toss. Yet if you talked to your average trump voter I bet you could get them to agree on more than you would disagree: Are you working harder, is the cost of living crazy, do you trust politicians generally, is life less stressful...

Over the last ... wait, wait ... *checks notes* ... 106 years we have been told that it's capitalism vs. communism. Democracy vs. authoritarianism.

Truth is, that's all bullshit. Who's won? Corruption has won. Money and power has won.

If you're talking about the 'west' - the US, the EU, the UK, even Japan and S. Korea - it's capitalism.

The 'east' - Russia, China, N. Korea - it's all the same.

In the west it's 100% neo-liberal politicians. No-one else to vote for. If you want examples of the corruption look at the US supreme court debacle, the no-difference policies of the UK and the EU, in the UK the 'church' lost £4bn in an investment bank in 2008 and the UK taxpayer lost another £4bn to absolute naked corruption of the government in the PPI scandals of 2020. None of this is secret BTW, you only need to read the mainstream press.

In the east, it's oligarchs and dick-tickling as far as the eye can see. Only difference is that journalists that report on it have a habit of falling out of windows or simply disappearing.

All of this leads me to believe that Marx was right; it's a class war all the way. And the only way to get through it is armed revolt.

Sadly, all the people on the side of the proletariat have been confined in their own worlds of surviving until the end of the month, being happy they have a roof over their heads, watching the latest reality TV.

It's a lost game, because we don't have the resources or the voice of the people who keep us down.
