If you aren’t using AI, you run a very real risk of falling behind in the race to produce voluminous mediocrity while slowly forgetting how to do your own job.
A brilliant piece of research by #TheGuardian linking simple #DataQuality issues to the unmitigated shit show of US #Tariffs. Errors in bills of lading and shipping data might be one of the root causes of the stupidity. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/apr/04/revealed-how-trump-tariffs-slugged-norfolk-island-and-uninhabited-heard-and-mcdonald-islands
"I felt the slow loss of competence over time when I relied on [AI], and I recommend everyone to be cautious with making AI a key part of their workflow.[...]When you are using AI, you are sacrificing knowledge for speed."

Given it’s international women’s day, I’d like to encourage you all, but especially Dutch men to read these ‘anti-acknowledgments’ in a PhD thesis. This is not from somewhere else, it’s from Delft. And it’s not from the 1950s, but from the present. Unfortunately what academic life and culture in The Netherlands is still like. The author is just one of the few who actually spoke up about it, but there are many stories like it.

What3Words acquire Swiftcomplete. So that's a company touting their flawed location system to replace traditional addressing now pivoting to validate traditional addressing. https://postandparcel.info/158553/news/post/were-empowering-businesses-around-the-world-to-offer-more-reliable-deliveries-to-precise-locations/
We're having to change the software in which our web versions of Practical International Data Management and the Global Sourcebook for Address Data Management are managed. This means a delay in updates as we reformat the data. A test version of PIDM is now online at https://www.grcdi.nl/pidm/ - any problems or comments welcome. #GSB #PIDM

Given that AI can't accurately count the number of R letters in Strawberry - I am skeptical.
🆕 blog! “endless.downward.spiral - is this the beginning of the end of What3Words?”
Long-time readers know that I am not a fan of What Three Words. I think it is a closed, proprietary, and user-unfriendly attempt to enclose the commons. I consider that it has some dangerous failure modes.
A year ago, The Financial Times wrote about What3Words'…

TIL Mercedes Benz deleted what3words functionality from all their cars.
This would be the same Mercedes Benz who ***invested*** in w3w.
And why did they disable the functionality? Didn’t wanna renew the licence.
Whichever way you read it it’s a shit show.
Today I checked some address data parsed by Chat GPT. As was to be expected, it was an inconsistent mess. It's something of a relief that my human brain can still trump "machine learning", but as other people can't see the errors as easily, it's going to remain hard to show them that it's not doing the required job correctly.
God, please grant me the blind trust/ignorance in technology of someone who simply sends us a five digit postcode to geocode without giving us the slightest idea which country is meant. 🙏

Oops - found on the website of an address validation company. Not a good advertisement for their knowledge ...
@mtmail And 's-Gravenhage (The Hague ...)
@mtmail There is no key on Dutch keyboards for reproducing this digraph using Unicode - in 30 years living in The Netherlands and Belgium I never found it written in any other way than the two characters i + j except in signage (where as one character it is cheaper!).
There is no limit to the schadenfreude I will feel when what3words goes under – the UK’s worst example of PR-driven "tech" https://archive.ph/mcDVe
