@mergesort They also train their own models from the usage of their product, which incentivized them to get as many people using their product as they could, and in a way subsidized their service costs as well. But your point is also very valid.

@pixelscience I meant holiday on Friday obviously. I'm so far behind I don't know what day of the week it is.

2025-07-03

@pixelscience maybe, but I am so far behind on work this week with a holiday tomorrow that I'm not sure I can spare the time. we'll see how I am feeling in the morning.

@pixelscience I know a person who got divorced over this when she found out her husband had an iCloud synced copy of her phone and was using it to spy on her.

2025-07-03

@pixelscience good question. EU-mandated sideloading has been out for over a year in the EU, so if there isn't any now, it seems that your argument that it will lead to stalkerware on iPhones perhaps does not hold water.

2025-07-03

@pixelscience if a malicious person wants to spy on their partner's text messages, photos, etc. on an iPhone what they do anyway is set up a new iPhone with the partner's credentials and make sure that iCloud sync is enabled for that stuff and then have an easy way to read all of the person's text messages and photos. no stalkerware needed.

2025-07-03

@pixelscience you know you don't have to convince me that App Review is just as much security theater as the TSA is.

I disagree that it is extraordinarily hard to install stalkerware for the general public. It is certainly not easy, but it is not easy to do even on Android where the installer has to follow many, many steps to get it properly installed.

People who want to install stalkerware are very motivated to do so and will follow through many steps to get it installed whether using the available channels or the new EU-mandated one.

2025-07-03

@pixelscience this whole discussion started out with you implying that the EU-mandated sideloading on iPhones somehow now made it possible to install stalkerware on someone's phone in a way that previously not possible. I am telling you that sideloading has existed since the iPhone was invented (through developer, adhoc, or enterprise distribution) and you could always install stalkerware if you wanted to.

2025-07-03

@pixelscience presumably the phone also needs to be unlocked to sideload apps onto it on either Android or the EU-mandated iPhone

2025-07-02

@pixelscience I didn't say I would be jailbreaking the phone which is obviously not what the EU has dictated. I would just use one of the various ways to sideload apps on iPhone that have existed forever, like enterprise or adhoc distribution.

2025-07-02

@pixelscience If I had physical access to your iPhone I could definitely install stalkerware on it too, outside the EU

Have any other developers received questions like this yet?

Screenshot from a support request asking "when will you be releasing a new updated version that fits nicely with the ios26 update?" on July 1, just a few weeks since the first iOS 26 beta was released.

People are complaining about the Finder icon while the TestFlight icon is out here looking like this

@stroughtonsmith @b3ll I mean we all know how far behind they are with this stuff and they announced PCC last year but didn't roll out most of the AI stuff for quite a while. Who knows how many servers they have installed by now? 🤷‍♂️

2025-06-22

@b3ll @stroughtonsmith I'm guessing they don't have enough capacity in Private Cloud Compute for third parties to use it. Hopefully they will add it as an option eventually.

2025-06-22

@rwitherspoon @stroughtonsmith Correct. There are some minor exceptions like you can download apps that someone else in your family has downloaded previously by finding the app in their previous downloads. Or if the person has one account on some device that has a newer OS they can purchase it there and download the latest compatible on their older devices. But other than that you are cutting off potential customers on older OSes by increasing your minimum OS version.

2025-06-21

@stroughtonsmith These decisions would be easier if people who have never downloaded your app were still able to purchase and download the last version of your app that is supported on their device. Since they can't, you will be severely limiting the number of people who can purchase your app if you go 26-only early.

@chockenberry Even the following week would be better. I already have a bunch of questions about the new stuff that I didn't have by Thursday at 5pm.
