#wayland and #bitcoin give off the same energy.

A kilo of "Let's reinvent the world" combined with either deep ignorance or willing disregard of how said world works and why.

"60k lines of wlroots is a rather high bar for people who want to experiment with new window-manager/desktop paradigms" is a valid complaint like "Maybe a modern financial system should support fraud rollback."

And yet, in both cases, they're winning because the old alternative lacks enthusiastic sponsors.

I recently finished "Absolute Boyfriend". You can tell how old it is in that the AI character is sincerely loving and not a transparent attempt to make a trillionaire richer by boiling the ocean to gaslight the MC.

Considering it's a tiny, fairly heavy glass bottle with no obviously terrible centre of gravity, there must be some unique physics distortion that ensures that an open bottle of Testor's/Tamiya Plastic Cement *inevitably* ends up tipping over.

Maybe it's 15% neutrinos and dark matter.

@davidho This so begs for a furry parody version. Maybe a Protogen design would be most appropriate.

The brand "owotisan" might be a viable point.

Future anthropologists will identify the exact downfall of our civilization began when furniture advertisements stopped discussing quality or style and started focusing exclusively on how many months of zero-interest financing you can get.

@darkmatter_ @LillyHerself LLMs are an extension of the "magic" UI trend we first saw with stuff like Siri.

It's an infinite oracle that speaks natural language! Just keep talking until you get lucky!

Historically, that's not how professional tools worked. You get stuff like "documentation" and "explicit limits".

This creates an environment where we blame the users when the system fails them: they were unfaithful and refused to spend 2 hours coaxing ChatGPT to implement a 15-minute fix.

@sternecker I'm irked that they say "warranty options vary based on the OS".

I know the software will be a mess, but is the machine *physically* less reliable if you install Windows Home on it so they don't want to stand behind it as much?

@koteisaev @JenLucPiquant I thought it came from some Japanese bureaucratic classification, since the NEET/hikkikomori phenomenon was an established thing there quite a bit before the current incel concept arose.

@triz I could almost see a case for DDOSing him with insults.

He's emotionally fragile and devotes a lot of resources to chase symbolic or trivial slights.

The time he spends shitposting on social media and screaming "I'm not Mexican food" is time he's not spending undermining the republic.

But you've gotta keep up an unending barrage of fresh insults.

To this day, I thought they had lightning in a bottle with "weird" during the campaign and was hugely let down when they dropped it.

If we repurposed the resources devoted to developing ever-more-advanced shaving products over the last century, we'd probably have million-populayion cities with self-sufficient ecosystems and professional Broadway troupes on Mars by now.

If we included deodorants, we'd probably be all the way to Europa.

I'm pretty sure we can get recover some of the lost ground now just by promising the people of the world "We'll blast the freaking Lume girl 800 million kilometres away from you"

@neilsardesai Weren't there some systems (I'm thinking Lotus Notes) where the masking for the password field was made of glyphs derived from the keys already pressed?

This was a sort of accessibility hint-- if you saw the *pattern* you were used to you know you didn't drop or double a keystroke, even if it didn't provide visibility for the raw data.

You could like sha256 the content of the field, then map the result onto a collection of emoji, for a similar effect.

Recommendations for someone who likes manga but goes completely deer-in-the-headlights every time I step into an American #comicbook shop?

I'd sometimes buy a TPB of The Darkness at a con, and every few years there seems to be a new #Gargoyles series that I manage to miss half of.

Like: #vampire (and in general anti-human) protagonists.

Dislike: "The current volume is No. 187, 30-184 are scattered on eBay, and 1-30 cost a year's college tuition" and "This series spans 23 unrelated books".

I can't quite put my finger on what exactly I don't like about XDA keycap profile.

It ends up looking like an attempt to make something that looked retro while somehow missing the point, like those cheap CD players dressed up to ape a Marantz 2215.

They got the idea of spherical, low uniform profile right, but miss the vintage small-top shape of DSA. The result neither fits a retro nor modern look, so it instead feels like "the only $12 set I can find for my layout"

So the newly announced #riseAgainst 'Ricochet' album cover shows a dramatically deconstructed Toaster Mac and all I can do is stare and wonder what's going on: two floppy slots in the bezel, but only one drive floating in space, the motherboard ejected at an improbable angle, and not one visible spot of capacitor or battery rot?!

Someone didn't do their homework.

@Kiloku @yogthos I disagree: the magic mirror that tells you things that made you upset was a fairy-tail trope for *centuries* before anyone proposed smartphones. :blobcatblep2:

An interesting take on "computers but without computers" is the novel "Souls in the Great Machine". Reminiscent of the bit in The Three Body Problem where they use an army as NOR gates to try to compute a task, but more central to the plot.

I just discovered it was a trilogy so I'll have to check the library.

What Micro Prose missed is that Railway People tend to be *very* Railway People. As in "shelves full of books consisting of three hundred pages breaking down every single product that ever came off the Baldwin Locomotive Works assembly line, including a lunchpail someone left on the conveyor in 1916."

As someone raised by a Railway People and who was given Railroad Tycoon as their first PC game ever, we had no need for the reference manual to pass this query.

@cassebonbon @Em0nM4stodon What if they had to carry breach insurance for their data-- with a serious payout attached?

The carriers would say "you want to store 40 petabytes of data not strictly necessary for your business, fine, but it's gonna cost you several tens of millions of dollar-euros per year to cover it for when you inevitably post live API keys to Github"
