Legislation that will strip Medicaid coverage from 8.7 million people and lead to 7.6 million more uninsured people over 10 years so that millionaires and billionaires can keep their tax cuts being officially called the One Big Beautiful Bill is peak comedy.

When Mac app toolbar icons had color, depth, and detail… 😋 This was Aperture.

@mattcomi if the implementation always guarantees a value, why not just return the value? And if it doesn’t make that guarantee, why not a true optional instead of an implicitly unwrapped one?

@kyle My read of your argument here is that Apple shifting their focus to services revenue is bad for third-party app developers because third-party apps indirectly add value to their hardware business.

But third-party apps directly add value to their services business so it seems like this is a good thing if you're a third-party developer! Bad for consumers and product quality, maybe, but I'm having trouble following your point.

2025-02-16

@kyle Isn’t App Store revenue the largest share of Apple’s services revenue?

@kyle Energy & the silicon that runs these models aren’t infinite.
Won’t the companies that employ both human engineers AND this hypothetical AI model out-produce and out-compete companies who choose to fire their human engineers and rely solely on AI? Why do you think this is zero-sum?

@Gte their engine is built on the Vulcan API.
To see this game on macOS would require a two-person team to completely re-write their game in Metal (and maintain two forks of their engine going forward) or for Apple to wake up and implement Vulcan API support for Apple Silicon.

@a_grebenyuk and if you do want a more powerful GPU you have to pay $$$$ for CPU cores you might not want. Bad for both sides!

@tclementdev the point of my example was:
Planes are ~3x-6x more efficient per-passenger-mile than the average car.

Many (most?) Americans choose to live in places where they must drive hundreds of miles per week.

Passenger vehicle emissions far exceed plane travel emissions. (By a factor of 8!)

Given all that it just seems a bit weird to single out a conference attendee. I’ve never seen you scold someone for living in the suburbs!

2024-10-07

@tclementdev modern airliners are extremely efficient and get something like 100 miles per gallon per passenger.

If someone flies from the Dallas suburbs to NYC and stays for a week, and only uses the subway, their trip overall is probably less carbon intensive than if they’d stayed home and driven their SUV every day. Only about ~30 gallons of jet fuel to get them to NYC and back.

Sad news, but Juno for YouTube has been removed from the App Store. It's been a ton of fun to build, thanks to all who used it and enjoyed it! 🫡❤️ christianselig.com/2024/10/jun

@harshil I think Halide’s Process Zero is an interesting step in the Fujifilm direction. Surprised how popular that feature is when it’s essentially “the JPEG packaged with the RAW photo looks nicer”

2024-09-28

@harshil Fujifilm’s simulations actually look good while Apple’s photo styles look quite bad.

They didn't ask us to change the location permission prompt, but I threw in a limerick for good measure.

A location permission prompt with the text:

A camera app, with delight,
Wants to tag where you took that great sight.
With location in hand,
It can mark every land,
So your photos remember the site!

@kyle My thinking here is that if software development can be automated then so too can most other forms of knowledge work.

That would be a complete, society-altering upending of the entire job market. Best case, the wealth is redistributed somehow. Worst case, it enriches 1 or 2 giant tech conglomerates while the rest of the labor market suffers. Either way there’s not much I can do individually, so not worth worrying about now!

We worked very hard to get forScore 14.3 ready for release today but unfortunately one Apple app reviewer had other ideas. We hope to have better news very soon. Until then, 14.2 should run on Apple’s latest platforms without any major issues.
