My SC500 has shipped! My benchmark will be EPMD's 1989 "The Big Payback", with DJ Scratch absolutely going to town on a "Yo!" sample. It will probably take me a while to get there as an absolute scratching noob.

The dividing line between critics of "AI" for software dev and fans largely lies in their different worldviews about what the state of software dev was before the "AI" bubble

Before LLMs arrived, the critics believed that existing software dev was flawed, largely inadequate, and a recipe for future crises, whereas the fans thought things were great but needed to be faster

2025-06-03

@tante Yeh, fair. He's been repeating that particular phrase in my feed a bit too often for my liking, though.

2025-06-03

"There is no class solidarity to speak of in tech." in @baldur's thread hits so goddamn hard.

I think this may be one of the main reasons I feel so motherfucking uncomfortable in our industry these days.

2025-06-03

@tante I'm not even sure that's Anil's intention, but in general, you're absolutely right of course.

So far it has been more or less "Yeah, but not THAT discourse" (Insert Environmental issues, Copyright, Socio-Economical impact etc.) every time.

They all learned the handwaving during the crypto boom and seem to have perfected it.

2025-06-03

Just to be clear: I also share all the other technical fears of AI especially as an assistive tech in coding. (See @baldur's VERY GOOD TAKE (tm) on that fly.io blog post) - It's just that I am always a bit reluctant to be super aggressive with that as someone who has never even tried these tools.

2025-06-03

All dumb jokes aside. I am still 100% weirded out by the current situation where a bunch of people I respect a lot are swearing by their AI tooling and a bunch of people I respect a lot would not touch anything connected to LLMs with a 3m* pole.

I am firmly in the latter camp, very much because I resent the companies behind this stuff and their, cough, ethics.

Still this divide baffles me deeply.

*close enough.

@aesthr Hm, I was so sure that it was "Digital" and "Analog".

For some reason I have Paul McCartneys "Waterfalls" stuck in my head for days now. Mind, the melodies are beautiful and I love that song (And it's odd connection to the TLC song of the same name) but at some point it's getting quite ridiculous.

@anildash @kevinriggle @iris_meredith @jalcine

I don’t understand why “the fucked up things this company does make me not even wanna try what the tool they sell is good for” is not an acceptable position.

Fascinating. I just had a conversation with one of these chat support windows on a product page.

Within 1 minute I had an actual human (judging by their responses) talk to me and within 10 minutes (It took a bit of digging for them to find the correct answer) I had a satisfying answer.

Okay, it's a European store for a Japanese brand. Than might explain things.

In other news, I put my money where my mouth is and became a member of Codeberg e.V., the Berlin based association that runs Codeberg.org.

My membership fee right now is modest, as I'm trying to find my bearing, but I hope I can invest time as well, later this year.

Third: I have a couple of actually useful open source projects I forgot about. Some of these need some urgent maintenance, I feel. I'll try to set some time aside for that after the summer.

4. I've never been good at seeing projects through and I haven't really gotten better at that over the years, sadly. My attention span is long enough to secure the domain and set up some GitHub projects and code a few lines.

5. I must have had enormous energy levels back around 2011. So. Much. Stuff.

2025-06-02

So, going through my old GitHub projects I have a couple of observations. First, my coding life must have been a lot more fun. Lots of small prototypes of cool things, lots of artsy stuff, super diverse. Exactly the kinda stuff I think I built my "brand" on, what ever that might be.

Since 2021 or so: Boring

Second: Lots of absolutely useless (by now) rails projects that would take ages to modernize. I think this would make for some bigger conclusions on big frameworks, but that's a blog post.

@Flxptrs hast du sonst schon mal geguckt ob jemand welche professionell verleiht? So hab ich das bei meinem letzten Büroumzug gemacht, den Anbieter hab ich auf Kleinanzeigen gefunden.

That being said, who came up with the specification for the codecs field in the type attribute on video sources? And why is the only tool that seems to be able to spit out enough info on existing video files to be able to assemble that field no longer maintained (or at least no longer packaged for debian?)

I mean look at this! I don't think anything web related should be this complicated:

developer.mozilla.org/en-US/do

2025-06-01

Well, that's two hours I will never get back: Turns out, ogv files were fine on the web in 2020 and are no longer fine in 2025. Wondering how much broken video content now lingers on the web, but maybe it isn't too bad because 99.9% is youtube anyway.

In any case: ruby-synth.fun should no longer have broken videos. Also, if your browser supports av1, videos should load much quicker.

I'm afraid nobody except me cares for that website, but so be it.

2025-06-01

@enocc I do kinda like powrss but is there a deeper reason why it doesn't have (or at least advertise) feeds itself?

How many teachers/professors/tutors did you have during your entire formal education that you'd say were truly great teachers?

(Boosts appreciated! Also, if you want to elaborate on your experience with an excellent teacher, please share your appreciation in a comment.)
