I used to make comics. I know that because strangers would look at my work and immediately share their most excruciatingly banal experiences with me:

β€” that time a motorised wheelchair cut in front of them in the line at the supermarket;
β€” when the dentist pulled the wrong tooth and they tried to get a discount;
β€” eating off an apple and finding half a worm in it;

every anecdote rounded of with a triumphant "You should make a comic about that!"

Then I would take my 300 pages graphic novel out of their hands, both of us knowing full well they weren't going to buy it, and I'd smile politely, "Yeah, sure. Someday."

"Don't try to cheat me out of my royalties when you publish it," they would guffaw and walk away to grant comics creator status onto their next victim.

Nowadays I make work that feels even more truly like comics to me than that almost twenty years old graphic novel. Collage-y, abstract stuff that breaks all the rules just begging to be broken. Linear narrative is ashes settling in my trails, montage stretched thin and warping in new, interesting directions.

I teach comics techniques at a university level based in my current work. I even make an infrequent podcast talking to other avantgarde artists about their work in the same field.

Still, sometimes at night my subconscious whispers the truth in my ear: Nobody ever insists I turn their inane bullshit nonevents into comics these days, and while I am a happier, more balanced person as a result of that, I guess that means I don't make comics any longer after all.

So what is her long game... Resurrecting Gallifrey? With Conrad as a mold for Rassilon?

2025-05-23

My growing standom for Susan's return is unamused by the phrasing "the day Carole Ann Ford was on set".

"Day," singular?! They had an octogenarian sprint around sets battling unholy trinities, saving planets, and probably doing all kinds of wire fu needed for the finale in one day? 😀

"One of us always tells the truth, the other just exaggerates a bunch. Which is which, oh traveller?"
β€” The Doctor and the Showrunner's riddle

Probably good advice! I try to skim past the adjectives to find some kernel of interest, but I'm sure your way is more effective.

2025-05-23

Sure, I guess. It wouldn't look great that Gallifrey can't have two separate, female science geniuses, but on the other hand that tracks with how human sciences have treated woman professionals.

Any chance to also roll Romana into the same package?

2025-05-23

To be fair, a lot of this is RTD's usual promotional bluster, but he knows his Who lore and how much the fans do too. I don't think he's talking lightly about "shake-ups" to what we know or think about Gallifrey.

Now, whether viewers are going to approve of or even care about those changes β€” that's an entirely different matter.

If looks could kill, Mrs Flood would still be regenerating after last episode πŸ™‚

They're a great comedic pairing so far, though:

β€” This is all beneath me, and also a waste of my time.
β€” Right you are, marm. Biscuit?

And there has been a lot of rhymes between seasons 1 and 2. Maybe in a couple of weeks we'll have Davies shrugging, "That's just how it turned out, no big mystery to be solved," but it is intriguing.

2025-05-22

Yeah, that scientific core of her character is important, I think. Her embracing magic as "a different form of science" ...sounds a bit like a convenient copout so Davies can remain wedded to his fantasy turn.

I'm looking forward to how it plays out on screen, though. Archie Panjabi has oozed attitude in what little we've seen of her in the part so far, and I'm optimistic that'll go a long way (see Kate O'Mara).

The more screenshots and teasers I see, the more it seems they're going for "oppressive surrealism" rather than "zany" with the depiction of the alternate reality? My concerns are how they are going to resolve the season arc, and how many more dangling plot threads get tied up.

Apparently, "Space babies" ties in somehow, but also Susan, I guess? Does the mavity thing get straightened out some day? Can we expect more callbacks to the previous season, just to trip us up further? And why exactly have the Rani(s) granted Conrad this "Wish world" if the planet is going to be destroyed by 24th May anyway?

The plot is probably going to thicken over this two-parter, and then be handwaved away by some big dumb spectacle. I just hope I'll be entertained in the meantime.

Let's not forget that this is probably one of the worst (canonical?) Doctor Who stories broadcast β€” and adding insult to injury, it was watched by 13Β½ million people. It's one of the most viewed Who stories ever, or was in its time.

2025-05-21

My sincerest apologies in advance!

2025-05-21

It was a fun novelty song when it lasted for less than a minute in the episode. A 24/7 feed makes me long for the world to end on Saturday.

2025-05-21

Unfortunately, this is all spot on. Everything great about the Rani was in her first outing β€” Kate O'Mara is still pretty fun here, but any semblance if characterisation is lost in the usual regeneration confusion.

Can't wait for your thought on "Dimensions in time" 🫀
