I am horrified and in awe with the Nineveh wargame from Nuts and playing quite a lot since I got it.

Last play face to face I go D*esh and go for collateral damage objective. This is exactly what it means and relies on three things;
- forcing combat in urban areas
- deployment of explosive traps all the way
- and abhorrent martyrdom of own forces

I won but it isn't glee satisfaction of victory that comes but rather a grim realization of what is represented in the game.

@RyTo I am truly amazed at some of the themes coming out.
As an example the War of the Triple Alliance stands as one of the best wargames of late for that and ease of execution and learn/teach while delivering all the history.
For History games I reckon is getting more high flying and takes the prime space of attracting both conflict gamers and classic abstract
gamers.

@Joementum @RyTo As a customer I conccur and will go after what interests me the most. As a business I am not so sure.
My personal feel is that particular series gameplay is liked by many and the particular theme is a bonus - what I call "systemic wargames". Can be reformulated to a new era and still sell the system to the fans, rather than the intrinsic history theme.
Disclaimer: bit generalistic take.

More examples at high level would be the methods of assembly for armies - given most played games tend to be strategic/operational.

Taking again on the Persian and Macedonia the asymmetry is very high, even if the result is an army piece placed on the board.
The elements needed to combine to make that army be possible makes all the shining difference for a design.

#wargames Friday musings.

- too many titles describe different cultures military using the same rules and adjusting values rather than unit capabilities.

- for example, the usage of stallions or mares in cavalry can make a huge difference.

@mmacnair Er... how so ?... I'd say it is equivalent markets.
Some would say 100+ for paper is ridiculous.
Just as an example I bought both starter sets of Oak & Iron and Black Seas, both miniatures wargames for less than ONE title of some company that points the magnetic north.
Also bought Strenth&Honour rules + armies packs for the price of one big box of ancient battles of the enemy of pompey by gmt.

@Joementum I am certain of it. It takes a very special design to take me out of my comfy zone of swords and shields and age of sail.
