Screw it. I'm taking more melatonin. It's not like my day can get ruined. It already has.

Fall asleep finally at 4am, wake up again at 6am. WTF is this? Anxiety + sleep disorders = torment.

@hosford42

Agreed. I want everyone to protest. Everyone. And we need people who are staunchly nonviolent, and we need the anarchists too. We need everyone out there.

What I love about the protest is that I see four-year-olds and 94-year-olds out there holding signs, showing up, and pushing back against fascism together. I don't advocate for violence. But fascists are violent and we have to protect ourselves from them. We'd be naΓ―ve not to.

"Almost every urban uprising in the USA history has police violence at its root. If you look back at the history of all the different uprisings, going back to the early 1900s, all are sparked by police brutality."
β€”Mariame Kaba

We protest because we don't want fascist violence, and we don't want to live a police state. Police hurt POC & poor folks violently every day. Police murder 1200-1600 Americans each year. THIS is what we're protesting.

@hadon That's what got this idea in my head! :)

@hosford42

don't do things without thinking first. thinking first is good. find out where action is happening, if your neighbourhood is not the place where it's going to happen.

@AncTreat5358 I can imagine! Hope you are doing better now!

@AncTreat5358 The good ol' boy network is still alive and well here in Texas, sadly. That's part of why I tend to go for remote jobs. Plus, on those occasions when I'm lucky enough to be working remotely for a company on the west coast, I get to follow PST. :)

@hosford42 Very well articulated, Aaron. I hear you and appreciate your mature positioning on this. I have similar viewpoints that I hope we as a society can grow beyond these limited viewpoints.

In a tiny way, this is like the infamous good ole boy network, where you had to conform in order to be included.

@Mab_813 @FranceskaMann I think getting people out there to start with is the hardest step, and also the most helpful one. Once people are out in public showing their anger, if the situation calls for more, they are there to see it and respond. First step is getting people off their asses and out their doors, and it helps to know that just doing that much actually helps a lot, even if that's as far as they go with it.

@FranceskaMann @hosford42

Encouraging people to protest is clearly not "discouraging people from fighting back".

And even if the situation in the USA is now dire, people there still have more rights and possibilities than people in Gaza.

As I recently heard from a researcher on activism, Tareq Sydiq, protests in democracys and their chance of success are quite different from protests in authoritarian countries.

@AncTreat5358 It really isn't. What chafes me the most is there's really no reason for it much of the time; it's just "how things are done", and there's some sort of implicit moral code that sleeping at a different time or struggling in the morning means you're a bad person. I guess it goes back to young people that party and stay out late, but I'm none of those things, and IDK that I agree with judging them for it, either.

@hosford42 I'm sorry you are going through the delayed sleep onset, and how poorly the world is set up to accommodate it.

I have irregular sleep wake rhythm disorder, something normally only seen in nursing home patients. The world is not set up for "nonconforming" sleep patterns (or the lack thereof, for me).

@hosford42 in my neighborhood it’s Town Center, THE big intersection near me. Obvious place to protest. Lots of passersby and sidewalk and parking lot and a little shade

@leahmcelrath.bsky.social The takeaway: Go stand outside your house. Stand next to other people who are unhappy with what those in power are doing. You want to do more, great! But even just standing there contributes. Get out of our house and *show up*.

We are shooting for 3.5% of people to just get out of their houses and *show up*. Based on analyses of history, that's the magic number where the authorities get unnerved and start caving to the demands of the people.

@hosford42 My suggestion would be the major Federal office in your town. If there's no Federal office, town hall would be my next suggestion.

Back in 2000, some friends and I picketed outside the local Federal Building for several days, picked up some support as it went on, contacts I met there snowballed into a local chapter of ADA that was active in local politics until very recently.
