#MakanApaToday - leftover apam balik (Malay-style Chinese pancakes) that I steamed since I don't keep a microwave upstairs. Since I was using a multi-cooker, I could use it to lightly sear the pancakes once steamed. Pandan flavoured and sweet - which is unfortunate since I don't really have a taste for sweet things for breakfast...

I've given up (for now) on using my Pixelfed instance - it's probably amongst the best in terms of features but for the alt-text that will not go beyond 150 characters despite stated limit. Pixelfed-to-Pixelfed migration is still in the works too. I do have a Flickr Pro so I guess I insaf, lololol. I've set up a Makan Apa Today album even but no image descriptions etc yet.

Three slices of apam balik (thick folded pancake with sweet filling) snugly placed in a bamboo dim sum steamer basket. The basket is on a multi-cooker that is boiling the water. To the top left of the photo, the steamer cover is moving out of frame (I was lifting it to take a photo of what's inside the basket).

My most favourite actor to this day is still, and likely will forever be Hugh Laurie. I was very close to committing myself to going to med school because of him, I am very glad I didn't 🤠 My brother did.

2023-07-26

@busycrying@autistics.life Yea, his character may not be too out of place or at all probably if you haven’t seen him elsewhere, especially “You” where he had a quite big role for a season as a college student chasing a married woman/neighbour - not the best image to have for a historical piece of a physicist’s young brother. I’m sure it’s never easy to pick a cast but for movies like this, I prefer as many of them as possible to be unfamiliar faces (and should ofc fit the setting).

As if 7.1 wasn't already shaping up to be a killer release, we might get to sneak in another feature here ;)

@busycrying@autistics.life hmm the Rodrick i'm familiar with in that movie was Devon Bostick, not sure if there's a different Wimpy Kid movie with him in it. I know this Dylan Arnold from one of the seasons of "You" on Netflix so it defo made it hard to take his role seriously lol

2023-07-26

@busycrying@autistics.life there were a few strange, unnecessary casts imo - and yes, Josh Peck's a really weird pick. Especially since the man's nothing more than a cringey, sensationalist YouTuber nowadays hanging with a bunch of other cringey Jake Paul esque fellows.

Others I find a bit out of place include Rami Malek (too familiar of a face to have that small of a role) and Dylan Arnold (too Netflix-ish for a "supposed" serious role).

@liztai@hachyderm.io @cendawanita@mefi.social yea I guess it's possible that the model you had still had replaceable batteries. It definitely was the case years back with Huawei, Xiaomi and even Samsung. but as far as I'm aware, all of them have stopped doing that except maybe retaining 1 model that still have that (but honestly even that seems unlikely).

Now having replaceable batteries is a selling point for very niche brands (i mean VERY niche, like a company that sells only a single model) and they're being sold for incredibly high prices.

@cendawanita@mefi.social ooooo i've never thought of that cos as far as I'm aware - they are under MOHE. but idk la i could be wrong :S

@cendawanita@mefi.social the company I work with collaborates with MYREN often, and I've been to their office once before. I was so confused the whole time I was there on why their office had UiTM logos despite not being at a UiTM campus lol.

@funkybuddha@mastodon.green this is useful to know, I'll keep that in mind!

2023-07-26

@funkybuddha@mastodon.green Yes and it's honestly thanks to you for being the push I needed to finally get this done 😂 and yea, KDE's Partition Manager and GParted are definitely comparable with each other - and such blessings for us to have, really.

I'm very strict about using graphical apps for most things (even when I'm most familiar and prefer using the terminal) because the goal for me is to be able to use Linux in a way that most would expect, rather than let myself get out of touch and think that using the terminal to get these basic things done is something that should be expected out of the average person. Linux isn't perfect in that regard yet, but it's definitely been SO much better, and is nearly there.

Thanks again for highlighting Rescuezilla, and also now for introducing me to Gnome Disks - I'll definitely check it out!

2023-07-26

@rakyat@hachyderm.io YES. It's so easy to do. I'm not expecting MacBook or Dell XPS designs for them, just design them like your average Chromebook would more than make it "professional" enough.

To give context, most Linux-focused laptops tend to have gamery fonts at the very least for their keyboards, if not also RGB
🙄 They also like to showcase their really ugly logos at the back (a "professional", basic but pleasant logo is compulsory for hardware companies). Worst, since in the Linux world, we don't refer to the "Windows" key as a Windows key, we call them Super key - I don't understand these hardware makers that make them as your ugly Linux penguin (its name is Tux) rather than just making them as a regular key that says "Super".

Headache la haha.

2023-07-26

@cendawanita@mefi.social @liztai@hachyderm.io yea I'm most curious about what phones do you have or are you aware of that have easily replaceable batteries?

Also I just wanna point out that even when news of this upcoming EU law first came out, many people have different interpretations of what makes a "replaceable battery". Because technically, all phones' battery are replaceable. You just need to have the skills and tools for it (which most do not). The law is aimed at making them easier to be replaced by consumers (e.g. by including any tools required to do so with the purchase of the phones).

#Linux is absolutely perfect in an #education or #government setting, I'm not even being biased or exaggerating. It's perfect in terms of security, workflow, its app ecosystem for both of those areas, and to seal the deal - they're not only license-free but also #opensource. There's a reason why some governments and schools are already using Linux, especially in #Europe (heck even #China lol).

What we need are hardware companies dedicated to Linux machines. We
already have them, but while their work/contribution to the community (from what I've seen) are admirable, to me, their products aren't really desirable. A lot of their laptop designs for example are very gamery and definitely do not fit the "professional", office look. Even some of their branding don't really inspire "confidence" like having some ugly font and penguin as their logo - to have that on the back of your laptop front and center... not ideal.

In other words, we need more companies, big or small, to offer Linux-focused products and support - but please make it "generic" and "professional" rather than making it so clearly aimed for the gamer/nerdy male demographic. Your products should be something that could easily be in offices and schools, rather than be a one-time feature in
#YouTube videos garnering no interest whatsoever from businesses or people.

@liztai@hachyderm.io phones in and outside of Malaysia are just the same with the rest of the world - there's definitely no advantage that we have here that others don't. That being said, I highly doubt that "most" phones available now have removable batteries, most, including iPhones, will require opening the back of the phone with a "specialised" tool, and heat gunning the battery that is glued in for removal. This is true at least for flagships and mid-range smartphones, some lower-end ones might still offer an easy way to remove them but they're definitely the minority (as far as I know).

Calling the Malaysian government the “Kuala Lumpur Regime” is like calling the US government the “New York City Regime” - our administrative capital is Putrajaya.

But yeah go ahead and write about things you clearly know nothing about, while ignoring what the Malaysian LGBTQ+ community is saying about Matty Healy’s behavior.

#Malaysia #MattyHealy

The Guardian columnist Peter Tatchell writes: “Matty Healy is not a 'white saviour' for showing solidarity with Malaysia's LGBTQ+ people, the Kuala Lumpur regime will be delighted that the focus is on the 1975, rather than the human rights abuses the band condemned”.

Clearly he’s not aware that Malaysia’s political capital is Putrajaya. It’s like calling the US government “The New York Regime”.

#LexisNexis has #ChatGPT integration now lol - the main selling point apparently is that their ChatGPT will refer/verify through their databases rather than create imaginary cases out of thin air 🤠
