After a brilliant evening yesterday at the Staatsoper with Richard Wagner, which usually works 😉, on 8 May, the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, at the Brandenburg Gate, the reference to the fundamental value of human dignity, as it is enshrined in Article 1 of the German Constitution, but also in Article 1 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Too bad I only had my smartphone with me...

An evening that gave me pause: On the 7th of May, at the HU Berlin, Unter den Linden 6 in H1072, where decades ago I enjoyed calculus, algebra, computational theory etc., I was able to listen to the philosophical seminar on the crisis of liberalism https://v.hu-berlin.de/?stat=show&vk_id=10138, learn more about liberalism, freedom, equality and human dignity, and follow an interesting discussion on the current frictions of liberalism.

In line with the Sustainable Intelligence Research Roadmap, in a later keynote at #AISoLA2024, I explored the state of data availability and measurement approaches for AI-based solutions: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-75434-0_1 and also proposed a five-star system for lightweight sustainability assessment.

Back from #ICSE2025, where we also discussed the twin transformations of sustainability and digital society, I'm pleased to see that after my keynote at the @Weizenbaum Institute last year, the corresponding paper on a research roadmap for sustainable intelligence has finally been published, open access CC-BY: https://www.nomos-elibrary.de/de/10.5771/9783748947585-77.pdf

It is rewarding to see that our work with @andy Zaidman, @francesca Lonetti and @Rajesh Subramanyan has paid off. But it would be nothing without the paper submissions by the authors, the paper reviews by the programme committee members, the guidance by the steering committee, the presentations by the speakers, the moderation by the session chairs, the organisational and infrastructure support in the background, and the constructive atmosphere on site by all participants. Thank you all!

I would have liked to have heard more recent and innovative research on LLMs for testing, testing of LLMs, test generation, vulnerability detection, and the relationship between sustainability issues and software testing. The papers, keynotes and panel discussions made for an exceptional programme and allowed for lively and intense discussions.

👍 It is good to see that even today a lot of testing research is presented not only at more specific software testing events, but also at software engineering events in general.

👉 20 years ago, the conference started in Shanghai also co-located with ICSE, the top Software Engineering conference. Although I was not at AST then, I presented our real-time extensions to the TTCN-3 test automation technology TTCN-3 for testing embedded systems at SEAS, the co-located international workshop on Software Engineering for Automotive Systems 😉

Until now, there was no question that face-to-face attendance was best for scientific exchange, which is now being hindered. But the organisers are very creative and flexible: The next ICSE will also allow hybrid exchanges with remote online participation. Thank you very much! See you on site.

I just read that #ICSE2025 https://conf.researchr.org/home/icse-2025 , the world's leading software engineering conference, has over 1860 registrations so far, with more coming in every day. Unfortunately, I also read that not everyone will be able to attend in person due to geopolitical shifts that are now affecting international research collaboration, even at scientific conferences.
