@sz_duras I should be less oblique with my references :)

2025-06-25

@sz_duras are you referring to the Upton Sinclair quote? I was just pointing to that, and asking to see if people could map out what it is their livelihood forced them to ignore…

The above may be specific, or at least more consistently relevant, to ADHD folks. I dunno.

Anyway, for my ADHD peeps, this may also be a helpful way of seeing:

Procrastination may feel like a problem of overwhelm or lack of preparation, but it is in fact a problem of uninterestingness. Once the salience is there - whether through a moment of inspiration or a moment of panic - the thing starts to move.

2025-06-25

A lesson that keeps showing up for me:

I consistently overestimate what I can get done this week, but underestimate what I can get done in the next 30 minutes.

The law of procrastination is basically the opposite of the law of political change.

@molenaar @pluralistic

Gary Stevenson has articulated one of the better counter arguments to the capital flight.

The bulk of wealth for the super wealthy is based in tangible assets. So what if a wealthy property owner moves to the Grand Caymans. The land is still in the same place. The same could be sad about the revenue a a corporation collects from its operation in a locality.

They are nothing ultimately without transactions in a locality. Even if they exchange currencies.

According to the City of Paris, in the last 10 years 150,000 trees have been planted and 45 hectares of parks created in the already hot city, all intended to not only improve quality-of-life today, but also help the city adapt to and manage summer heatwaves of 50℃ (122F) projected by 2050.

They’ll be planting a lot more. It’s common sense, really.

The last 3 generations of my family have all had (wildly differing) childhood experiences of fleeing a political system - 1912, 1949, 1997.

We never talk about ourselves as refugees, but I bet we have a lot of the same intergenerational trauma. I certainly have a lot of sympathy for people labelled “asylum seekers”, “economic migrants”, or just “illegals”

A friend (

So much of cultural change work is done outside the headlines and the limelight, before (and after!) the flashpoints, in ways no one sees or trumpets but is critical work.

On the subject of loneliness epidemics:

Do you want to make friends, but are having trouble? Get a social hobby. Reach out to old friends you lost touch with. Fuckin ask people you know if they wanna hang out. If there's a loneliness epidemic, then surely you're not the only person feeling lonely, right?

People really overcomplicate this shit, but sharing music and food builds mutual trust and basically makes people friends automagically.

You know how people often pull together in wonderful ways in a crisis? Well one big anti-pattern in a lot of startups is fostering perpetual crisis in an attempt to galvanize people and create this sense of purpose

Striking news from China, confirming that oil demand is now dropping there for the first time. Viktor Tachev, writing for Energy Tracker Asia:

“Oil markets have long relied on China’s seemingly endless demand growth. However, 2024 data reveals that the tides are turning and not temporarily. Instead, experts believe China is entering an era of structurally weakening oil demand as part of its decarbonisation goals and strategy to promote transport electrification. The country’s progressive move away from oil-based fuels and the production of competitively-priced EVs can inspire Southeast Asian nations to follow the same path, improving their energy security and decarbonisation progress in due course.”
