4. Re options/shares: if you get shares outright, that might offset some salary level, if you are willing to take a risk. Founders usually fail up, having shares puts you on a similar path money wise, just with smaller percentage (and some upfront tax liabilities).

1. Founders will pay themselves a decent salary right away, so they can up the work/life-style to impress more folks to invest/hire/buy product.

2. Of you are an early hire, your salary should be above average, not less (excluding options or equity).
