I'm not crying, you're crying!
So today’s tariff update is that small businesses and our small orders will now have to pay almost 2X the tariffs as large businesses. Shipments under $800 are taxed at 54% while shipments over $800 are taxed at 30%. This is utter bullshit. And will likely get swept under the rug because now everyone thinks the situation is “fixed” with the reduction to 30%. I am so sick of de minimus being framed as only applying to Shein and Temu. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-china-tariffs-de-minimus-loophole-slashed-temu-shein/#
New tariff twist - OK, so they're temporarily reduced for 90 days, and AP News, NPR, and CNN's reporting all implies that this is for every shipment. But then there's this article that says it *doesn't* apply to shipments under $800, which would still be subject to a 120% tariff. Does anyone else have any other sources that corroborate this? It puts small businesses in an even worse situation, because everyone will think it's "fixed", & we'll be at a huge disadvantage. https://www.axios.com/2025/05/12/china-trade-deal-shein-temu-trump
@alpenglow oh yeah, for sure, love those.
I also have this ancient power strip with a wired switch on the end of a cord.
I use it to turn my soldering station (iron, fume extractor, lights) on and off.
I've found the current equivalent on their site: https://www.furnlite.com/collections/power-data/products/fc-715-6-plug-outlet-with-15-amp-breaker-and-remote-switch
The "piggyback plugs" and "power strip with wired switch on the end of a cord" were very hard to find initially, didn't even know what terms to search for. Anyone know of any others?
The power switch on my Prusa is in the back of the enclosure and hard to reach inside the low shelf it's on, so I I've used this Phillips outlet with wired switch for about 2 years.
Today it started clicking, rapidly turning on and off, causing printer power panic.
Going to try one of these 14AWG piggyback plugs, looks much more robust: https://amzn.to/4dke2XI
Excuse me waiter, what's the tariff du jour?
"American levies on Chinese goods will drop from at least 145% to a base levy of 30% for an initial period of 90 days"

Progress on the React & TypeScript port of my LED mapper.

@wow_elec_tron that's pretty much how I used to do it, nothing wrong with that at all. Your stuff is brilliant!

> The money from tariffs, paid by American companies, goes to the U.S. Department of Treasury and enters the general affairs budget, said Felix Tintelnot, an associate professor of economics at Duke University in North Carolina. From there, it can be used “essentially for anything.”
I am not trying to start a debate, or say my tools are better than your tools, just explaining my choices and reasoning, what works best for me.
React is a library for building complex user interfaces, using reusable, nestable components. I know this can also be done with Web Components (and I've tried) but again, having one language and framework for both my day job & personal projects is key for me.
https://react.dev
TypeScript is a strongly typed programming language that builds on JavaScript, providing better tooling and error checking. It compiles to plain JavaScript.
I've worked on large JavaScript code-bases, and it can quickly become a nightmare without types.
https://www.typescriptlang.org
I know React & other frameworks can be looked down upon by some, but I've used them at my day job for years & I'm tired of switching between them & vanilla JS & HTML apps for personal projects.
I'm in the process of rewriting my LED Mapper app using TypeScript & React. It's not yet feature complete but it is functional, and it uses dark mode 😎:

Thoughts & reasoning: 🧵
To be clear, despite the cheeky name, I absolutely want to hear if the tariffs are actually *helping* your business. Haven't heard of anything positive coming from them whatsoever, so a different perspective would be welcomed.
