• They are seductive by appealing to a person's best nature
• By convincing the user that what they most ardently desire is almost within their grasp and they are right and good to want it and deserving of having it, they slowly turn the user into Gollum
• They are probably feeding everything the user whispers to it right on to the evil guy on the back end of a Palantir

@mcnado I don't have experience with guns or anything, but it seems to me that ICE could massively outgun anything that civilians could bring to bear. You've got rifles, but they've got tanks and rockets and all kinds of war machinery. And hopefully the regular Americans are trying not to mow down a whole bunch of civilians as collateral damage, while I don't see that as being a problem for ICE. Am I wrong?

America managed without a department of Homeland Security for the first 220-odd years. Bush created DHS in 2002 after 9/11. People were scared, we get that. Saying that you're allocating money to help defend American buildings and stuff, sure.
But the way it's been twisted around from threats and terrorism from the outside into upholding fascism means the whole thing should go. Especially ICE.
Brazil is responding the old-fashioned, counterproductive way by matching Trump's tariffs in the other direction. A FAR better response: Adopt Cory Doctorow suggestion to make Brazil a tech jailbreak haven, helping tech users and putting a big dent in the the tech monopolists' power.

If you're an older adult and not quite the mental powerhouse you were 20 years ago, please please please make some plans for your care should you be unable to care for yourself. Just deciding to "wing it" is a really awful burden to dump on your family.

Democrats, the vast majority of whom live in cities and suburbia, supported expanding healthcare, funding education, funding cleanup of superfund sites and old fracks and mines, and funding job training for people whose jobs disappeared as technology or industry moved along. Those programs strongly benefited America’s rural voters of all stripes. Republicans are gutting that, but somehow this is the Democrats’ fault for not reaching rural America?
