While DMAIC is often used for process improvements, it can be used to solve problems when identified, defined, and then analyzed, especially when data is involved.

8D Problem Solving is simply a holistic approach to solving a problem from the creation of the team until celebrating the positive results. Remember to keep primary focus on the system/process.

FMEA is one of the more complex root cause tools, but for those with competent teams, it can be useful, especially as a proactive measure to identify problem areas and risks.

The fishbone diagram (Ishikawa) is a very basic way to break down the elements leading to a nonconformance/issue. It alone is generally not enough to complete a full root cause analysis for a corrective action plan.

The simplest root cause tool, 5 Why allows you to look at the problem by asking questions till you find the true reason. Walking through the process will help in this. While not always the most effective method, it is good for the layman.

There are many types of tools to use to determine the reason for problems. Some are easier than others. Each sector of business will need to use different kinds depending on the complexity. Remember that process owners need to understand them to use them.
