@cR0w @malanalysis So true! This was the grenade I tossed on my way out the door of K-12: https://theforeverstudent.com/something-is-rotten-in-edtech-f97d4d32e878
@wollman No disorientation at all, just clarity!
Today I am feeling the joy of a brand new pair of glasses!
Those of you who wear glasses know exactly what I mean.
@dusk @dillyd @molly0xfff US folks lost $9.3 billion in crypto scams *REPORTED TO IC3* in 2024. The actual losses are probably significantly higher since not nearly all scam losses are reported to IC3.
New: Mike Waltz appears to be using an unofficial fork of Signal in the cabinet meeting, which archives messages elsewhere, off device. Unclear what potential security implications of this are:
@Epic_Null @AAKL @betanews @iandbarker You've hit the nail on the head here on why I won't use Passkeys: vendor lock-in.
Your phone might back up your passkeys into the cloud. Your password manager vendor probably backs up your data, and you may even be able to export the data.
But you can't transfer your phone-based passkey to another device. You can't import your passkeys from your password manager backup into another device.
I minimize dependencies that are locked into a single vendor.
@wojtekpow Thank you, I will look.
Greetings!
A generous @trans_rescue supporter has contacted me privately and volunteered to match up to an additional 500 Euros in donations to Trans Rescue!
If you would like to support the organization's critical work but you missed your chance to participate in my match offer, now's your chance to fix that! Go here to donate: https://transrescue.org/donations/donate. DM me a screenshot of your receipt afterward to be included in the match. Thank you!
@kinsale42 @jik
We want to thank @jik and everyone else who donated.
Due to your incredible generosity, I'm going to be busy.
Busy paying a landlord rent for a safe house in a an "oh shit" country.
Busy sending an agent to buy and deliver groceries for a couple scared trans people in a hiding place.
Busy buying an airline ticket to safety.
Busy arranging an overnight trip to Den Haag to plead with a government to do the right thing for a trans woman.
Thank you.
@athamanatha I am investigating this possibility but I'm not 100% certain it will achieve what I want to achieve, which is for my money to be held in an actual foreign bank account under my name.
I may have to compromise on that. 🤷 We'll see.
@jik
Obviously empty shelves will be the fault of the thousands of women who have refused to sleep with him.
As promised, here is my matching donation to Trans Rescue. Thank you again to everyone who responded to my call for help and donated to the organization!
@osuosl has been around for 22 years. They kindly host our gitlab for 6 months now, and provide important services for more than 150 other free and open source software communities such as @alpinelinux, @chimera , @debian, @fdroidorg, @gentoo, @gnome, @LineageOS, #ReplicantOS, @torproject. Now their future is in jeopardy 😢
We usually don't ask this, but please boost for reach, this is important infrastructure for so many FLOSS projects! :boostRequest:
@itorres Actually, I'm hearing from someone else I know that Wise may actually be an option, but I need to talk to Wise to find out details. I will post an update after I've looked into it further.
@mzagaja To be clear, I didn't say I was planning on buying and stashing gold OR Euros. I think it's unlikely that the risk of doing either is worth taking at this point. All I said was that I'm far more likely to do that than put any substantial amount of money in crypto.
@mzagaja I honestly don't know whether it would be easier to smuggle gold or currency out of the country.
I also don't know if the transaction cost of buying gold would be higher or lower than the transaction cost of foreign currency exchange at a U.S. bank, though I do know that the fees and exchange rates offered by U.S. banks for currency exchange are usurious.
And I suspect it is easier to buy gold than Euros on the grey market.
P.S. If you post a reply with a different suggestion for how we can protect our money, and I don't reply, it's because I've already thought of it and it doesn't solve the problem I'm trying to solve.
The main point of my posting was that it's not actually possible for most Americans to open offshore bank accounts, not to invite people to suggest other things I could do instead.
If you know of a country where I can open an offshore bank account, that is certainly something I'd love to hear about.
@McNeely Only protects against dollar downside risk, does nothing to address the risk that the financial institutions themselves could collapse and close down access to our money, or that we could find ourselves needing to leave the country quickly and be unable to reach our U.S. investment accounts afterward.
