@cyberlyra Ooh, I miss not living in Belgium anymore and just being able to take the train to Brussels to attend 🙂

By far my favorite part of Belgium is this demonic goose.

I'm wondering if anyone has recent experience with the practical turnaround time for #TOCHI nowadays. It looks like they aim to make decisions in about 90 days: dl.acm.org/journal/tochi/autho #sigchi #HCI

For my hackathon project I did try to make CFA (Cat Factor Authentication, using your cat's microchip as a second factor) a thing 😆 The project did win a prize, but more for the experimentation then the actual result wpengine.com/blog/hackathon-de

Part of a blog post from WP Engine blog about a 2023 hackathon. There is a picture of Mango, a orange tabby cat, having his microchip scanned while the scanner is plugged into a Mac mini. In the background is a messy desk of someone who didn't know this is the photo they would use on an external blog site.

Don't forget to write 2025 as
1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³
(next opportunity is only in 3025)!
(Or, for the and lovers:
\begin{equation}
\sum_{n=1}^9 n^3
\end{equation})

Visualisation of 1³ + 2³ + ... + 9³ by stacking of small cubes (so, 2³ is visualised by a cube consisting of 2 small cubes on each side). The total number of small cubes in this image is 2025 (or 1 + 8 +27 +64 + 125 + 216 + 343 + 512 + 729).

@lebelge Great to hear that you like the Verse Pro. Out of curiosity, what aspects of it do you prefer compared to the Kindle Paperwhite? From a quick search, it seems the Pocketbook devices can be a little harder to get here in Canada at times (sold on Amazon, but the Verse Pro seems out of stock right now). Oh nice to hear, that is really nice that ebooks bought on the Kobo store are also available on other devices.

@bbyucca Oh good to know, thanks!

2024-12-29

@bbyucca Very cool, good to know!

2024-12-29

@bbyucca Good to know! Not here in Canada, it seems. The Libra 2 seems to be sold out everywhere, including the certified refurbished models on the Kobo website.

You can use this game to narrow down 30 monospaced typefaces to find your favorite font for coding. I somehow ended up with Courier Prime (🤔) and promptly sent myself to my room for the rest of the day. (I use Menlo in VSCode.) codingfont.com/

@bbyucca You mean the letters on the Kobo (which has a sunken screen) appear closer compared to a flush screen device like a Kindle Paperwhite? And thanks for the KoReader suggestion, I've come across that too. Do you use it?

2024-12-28

@bbyucca Nice! I tried the Kobo Libra Colour in a store, feels quite nice in the hand and light. I think the Libra 2 is discontinued nowadays? The colour one is not as crisp as a non-colour version but it seems you mainly notice that when you compare them side-by-side. And the colour eink and annotation features seem very nice for things like reading or annotating recipes. I hadn't thought about this, but e-ink for recipes seems like a great use case, since the display won't keep turning off.

Nice, thanks! I've seen #KoReader recommended by a Swedish YouTuber: youtube.com/watch?v=HBKD7dh1rD At first glance, the text doesn't seem very nicely formatted compared to the default Kobo experience, but maybe that's just because of this person's specific settings? How do you use it? Does KoReader allow you to sync progress and annotations on sideloaded as well as Kobo store-purchased content?

2024-12-28

@ericsfraga And thanks, I'll look into Calibre! Many people seem to recommend that software. One thing I was wondering about Calibre is if it also syncs your progress in the book or keeps reading statistics, or if it's just mainly an ebook library?

2024-12-28

@ericsfraga Nice, thanks! Yes, the deep integration with borrowing from public libraries seems like a very cool feature. And apparently, Kindles only have that integration in the US (not in Canada). Thanks for the tip about Tordotcom. I've also read about standardebooks.org/ which provides nicely formatted DRM-free public domain books like from Project Gutenberg. That might be a great way to dive into some older classics.

2024-12-28

@demerara Thanks, good to know you enjoy the Kobo devices. Agreed on e-ink devices for fewer distractions and a nicer reading experience. About converting books, it seems it depends on the country whether it's actually legal to do that and transfer existing purchases to a different device for personal use. At least some publishers have options available and some authors like Doctorow release DRM-free versions. Would be nice if every publisher just had that option, even if for a premium price.
