I want to make the point that Zohran Mamdani talked about affordability while also supporting trans kids and immigrants and refusing to endorse genocide and he won against the heavily favored Democrat despite an avalanche of racist, Islamophobic hatred and zillions in dark money. Candidates can do all these things and win. It's just the Democratic Party is full of sellouts, cowards, and bigots.

🎧 So grateful to the @chaoss team for inviting our Product Lead Chrys Wu to discuss our latest research on CHAOSScast Episode 112!

Key finding: while formal frameworks aren't widely familiar, there's real hunger for clearer signals about project governance, user base, etc in #OpenInfrastructure

People want transparency & better communication to make values-aligned decisions - which is exactly what many projects need help with too 🤝

We’re thrilled to welcome Arcadia as a Founding Contributor to the IOI Fund for Network Adoption!
With Arcadia’s generous support, the Fund has now reached US$4.55 million — that's 75% of our initial target. This will go a long way toward accelerating the adoption and scaling of open research infrastructure across Africa, Latin America, and North America.

More on this collaboration in our blogpost: investinopen.org/blog/arcadia-

As always, Sam and the Copim community’s take on the recent news from KFG about sunsetting PubPub is nuanced, informative, thoughtful — and well worth a read if you’re just catching up to some of the complexity that’s been at play for over a year.

From our analysis of open infrastructures listed in Infra Finder, there is a high level of reliance between open infrastructures which is a strength but can also be a weakness. Merging overlapping infrastructure solutions or strategically sunsetting redundant tools may strengthen the ecosystem, making it easier for users to make choices and infrastructure organizations to build resilient business models. investinopen.org/state-of-open (2/3)

Trump and RFK Jr. may have just killed millions. As immunologists continue to track and warn about the evolution of the H5N1 bird flu virus, the Trump administration just cancelled a $600 million contract to prepare vaccines for a future pandemic.

Some of the key findings from the 2025 State of Open Infrastructure report include:

From an analysis of over $550M in open infrastructure funding from 2001-2024, governments are a critical source of funding for open infrastructures. Given the recent (and ongoing) research funding cuts, there is a need for coordinated action to plug the deficit caused by the cuts of government spending on research in the US and beyond investinopen.org/state-of-open (1/3)

The Human Genome Project cost taxpayers $3 Billion.

Within one decade of completion, it had already generated a staggering return on investment of $1 Trillion, with benefits in medicine, agriculture, energy, the environment, & more.

If you want to boost the economy, funding science is one of the best things you could do.

And wondering outside of a few posts from last night about this where the coverage is. Where the pushback is. Or are we all so fatigued and disenchanted that this is just another blow we have to absorb?

NSF portal for filing reimbursement requests is down for “planned maintenance” right as staff are told to stop awarding funding.

If you have unclaimed NSF funds, prepare to max out your draw down in case those funds get unlocked. I hate that we suspected this was coming after the swift dismantling of USAID and IMLS, but here we are … again.

Tired. Just so tired.

Staff members at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) were told on 30 April to
“stop awarding all funding actions until further notice,” according to an email seen by Nature.
The policy prevents the NSF, one of the world’s biggest supporters of basic research, from awarding new research grants and from supplying allotted funds for existing grants, such as those that receive yearly increments of money.
The email does not provide a reason for the freeze and says that it will last “until further notice”.

Earlier this week, NSF leadership also introduced a new policy directing staff members to screen grant proposals for
“topics or activities that may not be in alignment with agency priorities”.
Proposals judged not “in alignment” must be returned to the applicants by NSF employees.
The policy has not been made public but was described in documents seen by Nature.
An NSF staff member says that although good science can still be funded,
the policy has the potential to be “Orwellian overreach”.

Another staff member says,
“They are butchering the gold standard merit review process that was established at NSF over decades”.
One program officer says they are resigning because of the policy.

The President's "skinny" budget request was released today, and in it NASA gets absolutely decimated. Science is hit with at least $3.426 billion in cuts — less than the leaked passback amount but not by much. This is the largest cut to NASA's budget in American history and if enacted would lead to a surrender of U.S. deep space exploration for generations if enacted. Likewise, NSF stands to be similarly hollowed out at -$3.479 billion for general research and education.

This budget does not make America great. It does exactly the opposite.

When Cornell physicist Robert R. Wilson’s was asked by a Congressional committee member “how a multimillion-dollar particle accelerator improved the security of the country”, Wilson replied "It has only to do with the respect with which we regard one another…. It has nothing to do directly with defending our country except to make it worth defending."

Congress should, and in fact must, reject the President's proposal.
