My real home on the Fediverse is @keithzg@fediverse.keithzg.ca but I started another less personal instance for fun and negative profit. My posts here are lower quality and heavier on reposts; that's slop, bay-bee!

One more layer of abstraction. One more lazy fetch call inside a render loop. Eventually, you’re living in a cathedral of technical debt, and every user pays. Milliseconds at a time, seconds at a time, each click a tax on your apathy.

Liberals (in basically any western country) think that the political victory of the right is due to messaging: "We just need to get the messaging right".

No. Your politics are shit because you are adopting the narratives of the right (austerity, racism) and provide no meaningful alternatives.

@ned@beige.party I hope that sometime within the decades since I graduated someone has saved the first-edition (!!!) copy of The Satanic Verses they somehow had at Strathcona Composite

Lede: Prime Minister Mark Carney has said the technology will supercharge his fast-and-vast transformation of the Canadian economy, and he has tapped former CBC broadcaster Evan Solomon for the role.

We can afford to waste millions and millions on this grifter bullshit? Ok then...

Mark Carney wants to use AI to supercharge Canada’s economy. It's just not clear how - Toronto Star

I thought we were supposed to be the pious, woke, humourless ones, with our content warnings for eyes and booze and meat and scolding people for not alt texting their photos of boozy eye meat.

It turns out we’re just inscrutable. Incomprehensible. Like quantum science, an ancient god or a poorly-designed board game.

Other people don’t leave, because the alternative hangouts aren’t enticing enough. Some simply don’t want to give the Nazis the satisfaction of successfully driving them out. There is plenty of commentary, even among users of other platforms, about how Threads is bloodless (and owned by Mark Zuckerberg), Mastodon is inscrutable, and Bluesky is humorless.

@healyn podcast I was listening to today included the phrase "we're now five years into the backlash against the six months in 2020 where some powerful men experienced consequences" and that is so heartbreakingly accurate

@gwynnion

I want my browser to be a user agent. The thing that extends the agency of the user to their interaction with a remote system. That's basically the opposite of what any 'AI' integration does.

Quothe me,

So far, judging either by this PR or more broadly, it appears to be increasing efficiency like widening roads increases transportation efficiency.

Which is to say, it does by some narrow metrics, it seems immediately problematic in a number of ways (many of which seem fundamental enough to the approach that full solutions seem wildly unlikely) if you look beyond such narrow metrics, and the long-term structural results cause a whole host of ugly and counterproductive feedback loops.

I mean hey, maybe those skeptical of the hype will indeed be left behind, but it seems more likely the leaders of the pack are tripping over themselves to hurry down an expensive dead end that was paved by the desperation of capital to find another big bet after the Metaverse bubble burst.

If you aren’t using AI, you run a very real risk of falling behind in the race to produce voluminous mediocrity while slowly forgetting how to do your own job.

"Money going to Ottawa" is just another way of saying, "Money invested in you."

Funny how all the politicians who don't want it going to "Ottawa", want it going in the pockets of multi-billion dollar oil corporations. You will never see that money again.

That's what they want - to take YOUR money.

everyone is like “french is so hard to pronounce ><” so let me help you out

é -> pronounce this E as hard as you can, it ain’t fuckin’ around
è -> always pronounce this one but don’t put too much effort into it
e -> you probably don’t pronounce this one, ignore
ê -> there used to be an S after this one (check the english version of the word it’ll likely still be there) but the french government removed these in a budget cut, leaving a circumflex to remind you they used to be there just in case they ever put them back

@glynwolf@tiggi.es @ned@beige.party Honestly this is one of the reasons why in my insanely safe NDP riding (literal safest NDP seat in the entire nation!) I felt like my actual best vote option was the entirely independent candidate whose sole platform is proportional representation. It just sucks so, so much to have one's civic engagement in democracy swallowed up by arbitrary geographic borders; I've been lucky enough to have an MP that really did largely represent me and these days one that at least does more than most in parliament, but I'm very lucky.
