I turned down doing a workshop today. They wanted one on AI and ethics. After I submitted my tender (and they essentially accepted it) they asked me to spend half the time on teaching employee tips on using AI to save time.

So I explained I personally avoid using LLMs and image generators and wouldn't be good fit for the job.

It was quite a weird turn of events though and I'm still not sure how our initial talk gave them the impression I would be up for that.

Also, it was a 90-minute workshop and there is no way for me to cut the ethics content with exercises to anything less than that.

To be clear, a big point of the ethics workshop is to encourage giving people the autonomy to think for themselves on how, when and why they would want to use an "AI" tool, or object to it.

And I haven't heard back from this other speaking gig after I mentioned diversity matters to me and I reserve the right to withdraw if the lineup is too homogenous, as in large majority privileged men like myself.

I do still recommend living true to your values, though. 😅

Six metal tubes running side by side, all flush against the building, and turning at right angles, drop over the side of the top layer and top of the second layer, take a turn to the left, then turn down to the bottom layer, before separating into three groups of two, which loop around until they are pointed upwards again, then enter the side of the building.

The overall effect is slightly like a maze, or incan motif.

I think the most tragic aspect of deploying "AI" in teaching and learning situations is how much it pushes people into a situation of learned helplessness. This constant feeling of not knowing how to do a thing of being incapable of actually doing work on one's tasks is mentally so harmful. How do people under those conditions gain confidence in their abilities? Like ever?

It’s a year ago tonight that I was fortunate to witness one of the best displays of the Aurora Borealis that I have seen. The amazing thing is that this was mainly present in the southern sky with the whole southern arc lit up with the bold colours and easily visibly to the naked eye. Amazing stuff and a memorable night #Aurora #NorthernLights #Aberdeenshire #Scotland
