OH OH OH OH and yeah in that two parter in SE08 when they go back in time to Egypt to get the ZPM, the stargate is, dig this, RIGHT WHERE THE SPHIX IS NOW.

I don’t know how many of you are SG-1 fans, but, in my second watch through of the series (originally when they aired before and now these last couple weeks) time, and reading, has changed things for me in just how well the show used Egyptology to further their narrative. One of the things I noticed first off in re-watch of SE01 was the opening credits using the movies image of “Ra”

In season 8 when the team goes back in time to recover the ZPM from Ra and mess up the timeline, they then made some more connections that once again, with time, connected the dots and clicked again for me. The whole premise of Ra, the rebellion by the humans (Egyptians) and how Ra is presented in the opening image, directly ties to Akhenaten, father of Tut.

Basically, the movie tied all of this together to begin with and it was explained a bit more in S08, that Ra (Akhenaten) was deposed and the gate buried to be found in 1928 by the Germans. The history that they are using is that Akhenaten was a pharaoh who changed Egypts polytheism to monotheism, with the worship of the Aten and, Ra.

Akhenaten (Akhen Aten: Aten is satisfied) Aten being the sun god, another incarnation of Ra.

The history of Akhenaten is that he made those changes, upset the whole balance of Egyptian theology, and then decided he wanted his own city outside of Thebes. He then moved out to the desert and created a new city, Amarna. Akhenaten’s city gets mostly built, but there is much hatred of what he has done and when he dies, his son, Tutankhamen (Tutankhaten ; Living Image of Aten) abandons Amarna and moves back to Thebes. He tries to repair things by going back to polytheism, and dies at 18. One of the main reasons that Tut is lost until 1922, is that everything that his father did upset the populace to the point of both Tut and his father nearly being wiped out of the history of Egypt. It was in this obscurity, and the rapidity of Tut’s death and burial, that he had a smaller, obscure tomb, likely one meant for his regent, who then became pharaoh.

Anyway…. Yeah, I find it interesting, dunno about you all.

I just think it’s pretty cool how the movie and the show used the image of Akhenaten. Partly I think it fits their history and world building, but also, Akhenaten also not only changed the religious practices of Egypt, but also, the art as well. His image is highly stylized with the elongated features and female characteristics as you can see from the imagery. This also fit well with the actor and imagery of Ra in the film, using the same actor who had previously been in “The Crying Game” as an androgynous character.
