This week for the #ThursdayFiveList, I get to sit on Neurothing's chair until he comes back and the honor to set a theme is mine.

I realised that the #Solstice is upon us in about two days (the 21st of june) so, the theme for today is: #SongsOfSolstice.

I would like either 5 songs about either:
Blistering summers, long days and short nights (if you're in the northern hemisphere).

or

5 songs about freezing winters, short days, darkness and long nights (if you're in the southern hemisphere).

Post your #ThursdayFiveList with this hashtag to join in.

Have fun playing.

The last two of these songs aren't explicitly about the theme but I have such a strong association with listening to them in the summer that they have become summer jams and give me that summer vibe for sure

Use Signal. We promise, no AI clutter, and no surveillance ads, whatever the rest of the industry does. <3

Forced Consent & Consent Bypass
 /
16 June 2025
Meta announced today that it also wants to introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This further integrates WhatsApp into other Meta services - an originally independent app, which initially was available for just $1 per year without ads or data usage. This also means that Meta is consolidating its social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this."

The dream of the Fediverse is alive on Threads (and Mastodon) platformer.news/threads-fedive

The death of Twitter offered a powerful reason why we might not want to have powerful networks in the hands of a single person or company. The promise of the Fediverse is not unlike the promise of the web itself — that a rich network of individuals, interacting over open protocols, can build something together that is greater than any one app or site.

Visibility on Threads offers people one reason they may want to build in the Fediverse, as opposed to somewhere else. If enough of them do, it could begin to accelerate demand for other apps and services.

'Meredith,' some guys ask, 'why won't you shove AI into Signal?'

Because we love privacy, and we love you, and this shit is predictable and unacceptable. Use Signal ❤️

The Trump phone is a joke — but the joke is on us. I wrote about some of its many problems platformer.news/trump-mobile-p

The phone and the Trump Mobile MVNO will both have access to valuable location, contact, and usage data. How will Trump and his organization use that information? How will the fact that he can now sell that data cut against ongoing efforts to outlaw data brokers?

As the phone's manufacturer, Trump could let tech giants bid to pre-install Facebook, Amazon, Google, and other apps directly onto the Trump phone. He might even pressure them to do so. Will anyone complain?

Let's talk about Meta's investment in Scale AI and whether *this* reorg will be different than the others platformer.news/meta-scale-inv

The bull case is that Wang, an AI true believer and adept company builder, can effectively marshal an influx of new talent to bring Meta's efforts back to the state of the art. Meta's formerly monolithic, top-down AI organization is now flatter and has more room for researchers to maneuver and ship.

The bear case is that it's getting harder to catch up every day, even if you aren't starting a new team from scratch and trying to balance its work against two other AI teams that you are also paying a lot of money to. Meta's top rivals all already have next-generation frontier models in development and getting closer to shipping. The old thinking about frontier models — that they are easily commoditized by fast followers like Meta and DeepSeek — has proven to be less true than expected.

It's understandable to focus on what Musk might lose now that he has gone to war against Trump. But never forget just how much he *got* from his time in DC platformer.news/musk-trump-feu

Meanwhile, when Musk joined the Trump administration, 11 federal agencies had “more than 32 continuing investigations, pending complaints or enforcement actions into Mr. Musk’s six companies,” according to the Times. The Musk-led assault on the federal bureaucracy dramatically weakened those agencies, throwing the future of many of those investigations into doubt. Meanwhile, Musk set up Starlink in the White House at the same time Trump ambassadors pushed Starlink in Africa. He used his proximity to Trump to boost the valuation of X, which he absorbed into xAI at an inflated valuation, and introduced Grok AI to the federal government. He attempted to block an OpenAI deal with the United Arab Emirates unless that same deal would benefit xAI.

A report by Senate Democrats found that Musk’s cost-cutting measures protected him from up to $2.37 billion in legal liability from US agencies.

This is why I could never take seriously reports that Musk planned to step back from politics and become “super focused” on his companies. He was super focused on his companies the whole time.

It's #ThursdayFiveList time, and it's the first week of Pride month, so I've no choice but to give you a theme of #HighCamp
(Low camp also gratefully received.)

Glamorous, theatrical and vulgar, camp is a famed expression of queer revolt, although its practice knows no restrictions - flamboyant glamour transcends gender and sexuality.

Whether theatrical, revolutionary, or both, camp gleefully rejects conformity, instead choosing to dazzle.

Let's see five of your most bona and fabulosa musical favourites.

After a proposed 10-year ban on state regulations, some Republicans are finally starting to talk about the fact that AI might be dangerous: platformer.news/state-ai-morat

And then, in perhaps the first known instance of a MAGA conspiracist echoing the core beliefs of effective altruist-aligned AI safetyists, Greene said: "We have no idea what AI will be capable of in the next 10 years and giving it free rein and tying states' hands is potentially dangerous."

Greene's comments are notable in part because they expose a divide with the Trump administration. We are just three months removed from the infamous Paris AI Action Summit, where Vice President J.D. Vance — parroting industry talking points — announced that "the A.I. future is not going to be won by hand-wringing about safety."
