The Transalpin from Zurich to Graz is always worth a ride, regardless of the colour of the dining car. Crossing the Austrian Alps is beautiful, even if you're not sitting in the panoramic carriage. As far as I know, this will be the only remaining loco-hauled Swiss daytime EuroCity from 2026 onwards. (2/2)

Saying goodbye 👋 to the ÖBB @diningcar on my beloved Transalpin (Graz-Zurich) with 🌱 black lentils and mushroom dumplings. Despite the new Interregio concept in the Austrian Alps, the Transalpin will continue to operate in 2026. However, the ÖBB dining car will disappear with timetable change. Having both an 🇨🇭 SBB panoramic car and an 🇦🇹 ÖBB dining car on this scenic route was pure luxury. Instead, a (subsidised) SBB restaurant car will be part of the train. (1/2)

On 14 December, the Swiss standard-gauge network will become slightly more monotonous. The Chemins de fer du Jura are ceasing passenger operations on their only standard-gauge line Porrentruy–Bonfol, which only serves the two intermediate stops of Alle and Vendlincourt. The line will be served by SBB Flirt trains operating (Delémont–) Porrentruy–Bonfol. I took a farewell tour of the line on this grey, cold Sunday afternoon. There are still a few days left for anyone who wants to do the same.

Of course, not everything could be reached by train. Buses and boats were also included in . I always found them a little tricky, as every bus system has its own ticket system and checking in for a ferry is always different. And despite my small fear of boats, I enjoyed some very scenic journeys by road and sea. (14/16)

Of course, confirmed my preference for open rail systems without (mandatory) seat reservations like in 🇧🇪, 🇳🇱 or 🇩🇰. It was much more fun to travel spontaneously without worrying about trains selling out.
Even when booking your seats for your Pass, the differences are huge:
- 🇬🇧🇨🇮: it's for free
- 🇸🇪🇩🇪: choose your seat in our own booking system
- 🇫🇷🇪🇦: book online, but it costs a lot and we often check before boarding
- 🇫🇮: call us
- 🇵🇹: come to the ticket desk

Sometimes, quirky and nerdy trains were included in . These were particularly unsystematic services, absurdly low service levels on long-distance lines, incredibly comfortable regional trains, or just bizarre rolling stock. Needless to say, these preferences are sometimes in strong contrast to my professional opinion. 😅 (10/16)

However, I decided not to post about the overly touristy destinations of , as they are well-known enough. This made me think about overtourism, which I have experienced in many places. I try to reduce my global impact by avoiding air travel and animal-based products. However, my local impact remains the same on site. I am one of (too) many. This is also why I sometimes opt for smaller, lesser-known destinations. (5/16)

Why am I posting about my trip here? It involves a lot of work, though! Well, partly because I want to encourage people to travel by train. It's a great, ecofriendly way to travel. I'm well aware that I have a lot of time now, and as someone living in Switzerland, I'm in a good position to begin with. However, discovering intermediate regions is a great part of it in any case. In addition, I hope that those who already travel by train a lot could take away some new inspiration. (4/16)

Apart from the first three weeks, was booked more or less spontaneously, bearing in mind my 'must-dos'. I would do it the same way again, even though I couldn't fit in everything I wanted to do, such as visiting Eastern Europe. But my FOMO would have kicked in anyway — you can't fit everything into three months. And sometimes, fully booked trains or overpriced accommodation offered the opportunity to visit beautiful places I hadn't heard of before. (3/16)
