White supremacy is when Donald Trump bans 1600+ vetted Afghan refugees who helped the USA against the Taliban, but proudly accepts white Afrikaaner South Africans as refugees to the USA for no apparent reason except they're white.

Reminder that Trump is pro-apartheid & racist.

@jonathankoren i remember one of my first trips home to canada in 2011 after moving to the US. I was riding the bus back into Toronto from the airport (before there was a train!) and there was a sign for a newcomer settlement service (settlement.org I think!) that said ā€œyou belong hereā€ and I just burst into tears. I remember it so distinctly a decade later ā¤ļøšŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦šŸ˜

Coming back from a quick trip to NYC this week we received the most Canadian form ever at customs 🤪

A paper form with a full Canadian flag on it. On one of the vertical red bars it says:

ā€œPersonal exemption CBSA declaration (unaccompanied goods)

Welcome homeā€

On the other side vertical bar is the same text in French.

COVER REVEAL! It's my next book, "Automatic Noodle," a cozy, near-future story about a group of food service bots in an abandoned ghost kitchen who take over their own delivery app account. They rebrand as a neighborhood lunch spot, and start making tasty hand-pulled noodles. Set in San Francisco after a horrible war, this is about rebuilding and finding love after political disaster.

Coming 8.5.25!⁣ Please pre-order! us.macmillan.com/books/9781250

This is a picture of the cover of "Automatic Noodle," a book by Annalee Newitz. At the top is a blurb that reads "A story I didn't know I needed right now. So much fun!" -- Martha Wells, bestselling author of The Murderbot Diaries.

The image is brightly colored, on a sky blue background. It's an illustration of a yellow robot hand using chopsticks to lift up a rainbow-colored bite of biang biang noodles. The noodles appear to be emerging from a box that merges with an image of San Francisco's skyline below. A happy humanoid robot sits on the edge of the box, and another robot with a human torso and three mechanical legs stands below him. Robot arms to the left of the image hold a whisk. Steam floats up from the noodles. This is a picture of me, Annalee, in a white shirt covered in parrots, and I'm eating biang biang noodles at a restaurant. I am smiling and holding chopsticks. The text reads: "Pre-order now -- it's delicious."

Overheard (in a slack): "I would please like to ban both the mastodon reply guys who have takes about bluesky, and the bluesky posters with smug takes about mastodon

they all suck, and should all be banished to Threads so that the rest of us can get on with whatever"

@Chigaze i think most of the security issues have been cred stuffing 😭 which yes there's a fair bit they can do about but is still fundamentally an end user thing…

2024-11-16

@stephanie we're jazzed! it's also like suuuuuuper clear from that to me that the mastodon stuff should be just a registered nonprofit, while the other thing we're doing is clearly charitable, and that's ok! good to have direction :D

@monkeyflower @thedarktangent i will say though that I'm _very_ confused by the GCKey system, as someone who after today will be up to 3 Canadian non-profits and one for-profit entity to deal with… am I supposed to make one for each? or one for each different service??? idk and I just end up logging in with Interac/my bank instead lolsob

@monkeyflower @thedarktangent to give you an idea… the IRS just added the ability to make an account like 2-3 years ago, and it lets you print out what are clearly mainframe-output transcripts of past filings

the Biden admin made honestly incredible progress with IRS infra in their few years in power - the IRS had previously been blocked from using things like… OCR. By law.

@thedarktangent lmao TMA (too many acronyms :D)

seriously though I think i have 501c3 trauma, this stuff is SO much easier. corporations canada even has a nonprofit bylaw generator!!

People love to complain about the CRA, because taxes duh, but their public documentation is SO GOOD. Like seriously, look at how clear this stuff is! canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/se

(spending the morning FINALLY figuring out incorporation stuff for the instance, wheeeeee)

@glyph ok so Francine’s substack is $400/yr and I would pay more than 3x that to hear/read content from the three of them on the regular. I fully believe there are another 1000 weirdos like me out there. Bam that’s $1m/yr
